Berkeley victim's call for help went unheeded

Thirteen critical minutes elapsed between the time a Berkeley hills homeowner called police about a trespasser and an attack by the intruder that left the man beaten to death, sources close to the investigation said Tuesday.

Berkeley police have acknowledged they were keeping officers on standby for a lightly attended Occupy Oakland march, meaning no officer was dispatched when Peter Cukor, 67, first called at about 8:45 p.m. Saturday on a nonemergency line to report a suspicious person "hanging around" his property near Tilden Park.

After phoning police, Cukor walked 160 feet from his Park Gate home to a fire station around the corner on Shasta Road for help, but no one was there because firefighters were out on a call, sources said.

As Cukor returned to his home, he was allegedly confronted by Daniel Jordan DeWitt, 23, who family members say is mentally ill. DeWitt picked up a knee-high ceramic pot and bludgeoned Cukor with it, authorities said.

Second call made

Cukor's wife, Andrea, phoned 911 to report the assault 13 minutes after Cukor first called, said law enforcement sources, speaking on condition of anonymity because a police investigation is continuing. Several officers then arrived within four minutes and arrested DeWitt a short distance from the home at 9:22 p.m.

Cukor, a business management consultant and father of two grown sons, died at Highland Hospital in Oakland. His family has declined to comment.

DeWitt is being held without bail on suspicion of murder. He is to be arraigned today in Alameda County Superior Court in Oakland.

A .40 Glock or even a .22 would have been superior to a telephone for self defense.

Awww. Not guilty by reason of Insanity!

I swear, liberals should have to live in their own country. We'll take the south, coast to coast. We'll build a fence. They can have the north, where they can grapple with illegal Canadian immigrants.

Well, at least Kookifornia received a “better” Brady score this year due to more restrictive gun laws.

Another example to add to the growing list : When seconds count, police help is only minutes away...

Is it just me, or is it in every one of these kind of stories the “bad guy” is always mentally ill? Where is the family before their ‘precious little angel’ goes out and kills someone?

Another decent, hard working family man, killed by trash. :(

I am not absolving the Occupiers in any way. Their presence has caused chaos, destruction, filth, vermin, sickness, loss of business, crimes, and even deaths everywhere they go.

However, that said, I just can't understand why in Berkley, of all places where do many crazies seem to hang out and roam, the police could not dispatch at least ONE officer away from the "stand by" when they first received the call from Cukor. Just the sound of a siren probably would have caused the perp to run off. This was a bad call on the part of the police.

You should plan on taking the far north, too. Don't forget all of Alaska's resources, sea coast, defensibility, etc. Yeah, Alaska is a good one. Oh. We'll build our own fence. (Man, I'd like to be the fencing contractor for THAT job...)

I heard that Al Sharpton has summoned a news crew out to the victims house for a news conference. Oh wait, the victim is white.. Never mind.

you may, but I certainly can't claim credit for it. It is a good one and is worth spreading far and wide. It has a companion saying that is also very good: "when seconds count, the police are only minutes away."

My idea is not to build a fence so much, as a walled, trap-filled maze across the length of the border, which is modularly designed so that we can change the layout regularly. Leave the entrances open and let the ones who want to have a go at it try. Ladders and cutting through fences would be useless, since they’d just end up in the maze anyway. Design it to be dangerous enough so that only the most cunning will be able to avoid a painful death.

Anyone who can get through, can apply for fast-track to citizenship, since we’ll only be getting the best of them. A Darwinian gauntlet, if you will :)

OK; we’ll take Alaska and the liberals can have Hawai’i. Suits them, to loll about. And there will be LOTS of fence contracting; because we not only need to build one at the Mexican border, but also a longer one to keep the liberals from coming south.

It’ll be like the partition of India and Pakistan — liberals going north with their Louis Vuitton dog carriers and Yves Saint Laurent luggage; conservatives going south with their camper coolers and plastic trash bags full of clothes. LOL!

We will need an easement for the Alaska pipeline, that’s all.

I believe it's private property, so that shouldn't be too hard.
