(High-tech) Drive-In Theater Coming to Fort Worth

Get ready for some retro entertainment because the drive-in theater is returning to Cowtown.

The Tarrant Regional Water District gave Coyote Theaters the go ahead Tuesday to develop a drive-in theater along the Trinity River just south of La Grave Field.

"We are producing the first urban drive-in right now in the U.S.," said J.D. Granger Trinity River Development Director.

It’ll have digital projectors and ways to listen through your car or smart phones. The tech will allow it to be the first drive-in in the country to offer first run movies simultaneously in both English and Spanish.

There will also be more than one way to watch movies on the four screens.

"We’re going to have cabanas where you can watch from cabanas instead of your car. There’s ways to watch if you were going to ride your bike or in Fort Worth’s case ride your horse," said Coyote Theaters CEO Brady Wood.

What was the 1st one you ever saw?

I’m going to tell a story my dad would rather I not. ;p

(He and I are only 19 years apart.) Anyway, he took his girlfriend to see Blue Lagoon and I was dragged along because it was his weekend. Dang guy put me on the hood of the car with a blanket and pillows and told me to face foward at all times and knock three times if I had to pee.

I have no idea why there are not more drive-ins today. I never understood why they died out.

Cars got to small to make out in? With my old '56 Olds, I went to them all the time --- never once watched a movie. ;~))

I’ll probably regret asking this but ... did you ever attend a drive-in movie and do you remember the first one you ever saw?

Sound quality maybe? They also deteriorated to the point that you couldn’t see a first-run movie at a drive-in. That could have contributed to their demise. I’m looking forward to this theater’s opening on Memorial Day. I’m there.

Yes, I miss the outdoor drive-in. Wonder if the prices will be better then indoor rip-offs.

My hometown still has the original kind of drive-in.

I can’t recall the first one I saw, my mother started taking me from a wee one. I loved the smell of those mosquito rings. And we would bring a big paper sack of popcorn.

I recall the last one I saw (80’s), before the drive-in closed down off I-45 (Houston area). It was Friday the 13th. Oh lawdy was that scary!

I was thrilled when we lived in S.C., they had a Drive-In and I was able to load up with my neighbor and we would take the kids. First one kiddo saw was The Lion King.

That’s pretty sneaky/smart of your dad! hahahaha! Pull off a date and his weekend parenting. Funny stuff! :p

I remember when the sports director at the Y day camp, where I was a counselor, got the keys for the van. The guy counselors packed into the van with a couple of cases of beer, and headed for the drive-in.

You can guess the test. They must have loved us.

Are they still working the mines, too?? And I suppose you’re having bear for dinner. :-)

Do they play first-run movies? Just curious.

Don’t forget the 1960 Rambler station wagons-the seat folded down so one had 6 feet or so of flat surface.

First movie I saw was some James Bond movie where he’s trapped in a swimming pool with a shark. I was blown away, because I was 5.

My parents fell asleep. When they woke up, they said my nose was glued to the windshield.

I remember thinking, “I hope that never happens to me!”

You have the very good stereo sound

The I Phone audio jack plugs into an FM transmitter that sends the signal to the vehicle FM radio that plays the stereo signal.

The transmitter device is powered by the 12 volt onboard system (cigarette lighter) and is very small.

My son handed me down his old one and I use it to listen to audio books as I travel the Interstates for my job

I don’t remember the very first, but a very early one was TOY TIGER starring Jeff Chandler.

Thunderball with Sean Connery? Apparently some of his reactions were real as the sharks got too close for comfort.

I love drive-in's.

Who cared what they were playing. I parked my van in the back row...and it was a rock'n!

My grandparents (who raised me) were not happy. I was only ten and Blue Lagoon was rather inappropriate. They had all sorts of questions to answer. :)
