Former Senator Alan Simpson had some choice words for his one time colleague, former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum.
"I know Santorum, I served with him," he said. "He is rigid and a homophobic. He believes that gays and lesbians, he mentioned in an interview in 2003, about bestiality, and gays and lesbians. I think that's disgusting," said Simpson.
The former three-term Senator from Wyoming has always been known for both his candor and his ability to work across party lines, said Republicans are hurting themselves by focusing on social issues.
"Here's a party that believes in government out of your life, the precious right of privacy and the right to be left alone. How then can they be the hypocrisy of fiddling around in these social issues? We won't have a prayer," he told Bob Schieffer in an interview for CBS News's Face to Face, a weekly web interview from the staff of Face the Nation....
Simpson's prognosis about the focus on social issues could prove true in November's general election....

He always was. Conservatives just weren't paying attention. His big mouth rivals Joe Biden's as well.
WOW...you must have the "new, upgraded version of the Constitution" that you're referencing. Could you please quote where that appears in the First amendment? My version has no such inclusion.
Just the establishment trying to derail Santorum. The fear is turning into panic.
A prime example of US public education.

Was Reagan hurt because he was pro-life and pro-family? Was GW Bush? Of course not.
Amen! The ridiculous term “homophobic” is designed to denigrate anyone who believes homosexuality is wrong. Nobody cares what these people do in the privacy of their own homes, but they want to force their perversion on the rest of us. In particular, they should not be allowed to adopt children. If you don’t think there is a greater risk of sexual abuse of children in such situations, you have not been paying attention to the news.
Alan Simpson....sell outy on immigration; sell out on cutting spending; gone over the hill ong ago——shoulda stayed there
Simpson in his dotage cannot understand this basic premise. Dennis Prager in debating this question with a gay activist asked the same question, why not adult incest or polygamy. The activist’s only answer was that incest and polygamy where “icky”. Prager than informed the activist that millions of Americans include homosexuality in the “icky” catagory. Another Prager brilliant statement was that gay people are not discrimated against in marraige. They have the perfect right to marry someone of the opposite sex as everbody else.
And you joined FR just so you could rip Santorum....what are your conservative creds????
Pa Kettle cranks out another dumb’un! LOL Bob

Alan Simpson is a senile liberal old fool.
This creature only played the role of a conservative in Wyoming, for to have done otherwise would have ended his political career.
After he retired he bragged about fooling the voters on how he really felt about gun control. He said to have told the truth he could not have gotten elected dog catcher.
Alan Simpson was a leading RINO for years in the Senate. Disregard anything this liberal has to say. He’s a waste.
“Alan Simpson has been an outspoken advocate for access to abortion stating it is a horrible situation but a deeply intimate and personal decision and should not be a political issue in a party that believes in “government out of our lives” and “the right to be left alone” and “the precious right of privacy”. He supports gay and lesbian rights, and equality for all persons regardless of race, color, creed, gender, or sexual orientation. In an article in the Washington Post, the former senator wrote an article criticizing the “Don’t ask, don’t tell” policy stating “’Gay’ is an artificial category that says little about a person. Our differences and prejudices pale next to our historic challenge.”

I would very much disagree with that statement.
Having unelected Judges and tiny minorities of the population tell the vast majority how our society is going to be structured at the most basic levels is very much interfering in our day to day lives.
It is also a religious liberty question. Every religion that I know of has as a basic tenant of that religion that marriage is the union of a man and a woman (or women in some cases).
Anytime that gay marriage has been put to a referendum in any state traditional marriage has won handily.
I was raised in Wyoming during the start of the Simpson era. My dad knew him, and said he was a Democrat masquerading as a Republican.
I think I’d want to keep a close eye on my farm animals when Alan is around.
Al, there are relatively few people who are truly homophobic...unless the homosexual in question is bigger than they are and won’t take “no” for an answer.
Gay marriage has nothing to do with privacy or a right to be left alone. The Supreme Court decision striking down sodomy laws, and Federal laws banning discrimination based on sexual orientation already cover all that, and nobody is seriously talking about reversing any of that. Gays don’t want to be left alone, they want to be included in an institution that was expressly designed without them in mind, isn’t designed to accommodate them, and would be undermined by their inclusion. They also want to lay claim to government incentives associated with that institution for which they will not provide the societal benefit that those incentives were designed to promote.
More than anything, they are cynically attempting to use the brute force of the legal system to thwart the will of the people and force society to comply with their desires, against other citizen’s free will. Most of them do not even see the irony of using a tyranny of the minority to end so-called “oppression”.
You almost got it right. You're statement should have read;
"I guess its the difference between the Libertarian viewpoint that pretty much says anything goes..."
