(CBS News) Former Senator Alan Simpson had some choice words for his one time colleague, former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum.
"I know Santorum, I served with him," he said. "He is rigid and a homophobic. He believes that gays and lesbians, he mentioned in an interview in 2003, about bestiality, and gays and lesbians. I think that's disgusting," said Simpson.
The former three-term Senator from Wyoming has always been known for both his candor and his ability to work across party lines, said Republicans are hurting themselves by focusing on social issues.
"Here's a party that believes in government out of your life, the precious right of privacy and the right to be left alone. How then can they be the hypocrisy of fiddling around in these social issues? We won't have a prayer," he told Bob Schieffer in an interview for CBS News's Face to Face, a weekly web interview from the staff of Face the Nation.

Alan Simpson has for years been uneasy over the fact that his father, Milward L. Simpson, a true conservative, voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Santorum's comments about gay marriage were right on. Once you accept the idea that the definition of marriage is no longer between one man and one woman, it is a slippery slope to polygamy, marriage to animals, etc. Jerks like Simpson want to use labels to denigrate people who speak the truth. It is easier to employ personal attacks than address the substance of the statements.
“He believes that gays and lesbians, he mentioned in an interview in 2003, about bestiality, and gays and lesbians.”
Wonderful syntax from a former senator. Let me try: “Alan Simpson...something about nazis...the KKK like him...what a boob.”
Drudge/Simpson/Rove/ etc etc -— The long knives of the GOP-e/Romney smear machine are working overtime on Santorum this week. You would almost think they are in a panic over something.
Liberal media tactic #43: Pull out old RINO to criticize Republican.
Bob Scheiffer never had on a conservative retired Democrat to criticize Obama on social issues, like when he claimed his faith called for higher taxes.
Yes, sir. Tonight at 8 p.m. EST from Mesa, AZ.
I’ll never forget Alan Simpson defending abortion because we don’t want ‘Cyclopian’ children running around. He is a disgusting, ugly person.
RE: especially the ones who rub their feces in your face,

I hear you. I see it almost everyday on TV, even in a supposedly teen-friendly prime time show like GLEE.
Well, what to say...
A long time ago, Gay love used to be called “The love that dares not speak its name”.
Today, it’s the love that just won’t shut the F up !!
The more they attack Santorum on satan, Homos, etc etc the more popular he becomes. Liking him more and more everyday!
:-)
Someone is in the wrong party. I don't believe the right to privacy is in the constitution. If Simpson does and the party he claims to be a member of does, then one of us is in the wrong party.
Still sniffing around for another gig eh Al?
Simpson is a RINO tool who doesn’t like conservatives. But he’d have lots of nice things to say about Ted Kennedy, Robert Byrd or any other liberal senator.
1st question today in debate from John King will be:
“senator Santorum, do you hate gays & lesbians?”
2nd question:
“senator Santorum do propose to ban contraceptives”?
My question...why do the republicans accept debate forums
such as CNN?
Simpson isn't making sense. I think THAT'S disgusting.
It’s not hard to be racist, sexist, homophobic or Islamophobic in 2012.
All you have to do is disagree with any of those people.
My answer...I don't know. I know they like the debates, but it doesn't have to be on CNN.
“Republicans are hurting themselves by focusing on social issues”
I agree. When politicians start talking about family values et. al., it’s usually either because they’re avoiding real issues or because nothing’s pressing. As there’s no way we live in unpressing times, we’re avoiding. Everybody knows Republicans are against abortion and homosxual marriage and think Western Civilization has been crumbling (or at least sliding); move on, already.
Two points, though. One is that Democrats and their willing accomplices will force “social issues” to the forefront whether or not Republicans willingly follow. For it is in their interest, as they see it, to paint us as neanderthals “turning back the clock” to anti-sodomy laws and backalley abortions. Another is that since, apart from Romneycare, there’s no substantive policy distinction between Santorum and Romney, Santy’s gotta grab the Christian Soldier mantle.
I don’t know if it’s so much that Santorum wants to be the social conservative alternative, or that he’s stumbling into liberal traps like answering honestly about Griswold v. Connecticut. Either way, it’s all a distraction.
