The real trouble with Rick (he can't win because he's "a sourpuss")
NY Post ^ | February 21, 2012 | John Podhoretz

Posted on 02/21/2012 4:22:10 PM PST by presidio9

Can Rick Santorum win the Republican nomination? Sure. He’s leading in the polls nationally and in important states — and he’s doing so without so much as a campaign headquarters. Imagine what might happen if Santorum pulls off a few more stunning upsets.

-SNIP-

There seems to be a notion in political circles that Mitt Romney can just stay the course and go all the way to the convention in Tampa, but staying the course likely won’t be good enough.

-SNIP-

Republican voters would be eminently mistaken to believe that. As things stand right now, Rick Santorum can’t win the presidency — and Mitt Romney can.

-SNIP-

No, Santorum’s problem is — forgive the technical graduate-school political-science terminology here — that he’s a sourpuss, and sourpusses don’t get elected president.

The former Pennsylvania senator looks like he swallowed a lemon — and he acts like America is the lemon he swallowed.

The most telling quote of his presidential run was this one last week in South Dakota: “I don't think God will continue to bless America if we continue to kill 1.2 million children every year.”

These are not lightly chosen words and Santorum doesn’t take them lightly, and that is to his credit. He believes abortion is murder, and therefore that mass murder is taking place in the United States — and that a country whose legal code condones mass murder will be judged for its sin the way Abraham Lincoln suggested in his second inaugural address that the Civil War was God’s judgment on America for the sin of slavery.

-SNIP-

There is no way that a man who expresses such a dark view of the American national character can win the presidency.

That's bad news for Mitt. His entire campaign strategy and governing strategy consist of (1) trash the opposition, and (2) stay the course, just at a slower pace than Obama.

Leading Romneybot to American voters: “Santorum unelectable because he sounds too much like Lincoln.”

Is John Podhoretz ever right??? In one thousand years of reading the NY Post, I don’t think he’s ever been correct on anything - including his asinine film and tv reviews.

I’m a Newt supporter but Rick always looks smiley and happy to me. He’s serious about abortion and its consequences. Probably having serious illness with his children has made him think deeply on the subject. But, on any other subject, he looks quite happy on the campaign trail. This is just another MSM lie.

I love how Newt and Rick are giving cramps to the Mitt supporters.

"He believes abortion is murder..."

It is.

"...and therefore that mass murder is taking place in the United States..."

It is

" — and that a country whose legal code condones mass murder will be judged for its sin..."

It will.

I am primarily an ABR conservative. I agreed most with Santorum, but backed Gingrich because I thought he stood the best chance against Obama. Because Romney is good for 25% of the vote wherever he goes, and Paul is good for another 20%, this race is not big enough for both Santorum and Gingrich. In the interest of beating Romeny, one of them has got to go now. The clock is ticking. If Santorum pulls off Michigan, Newt needs to get out of the race and throw everything he's got behind him.

If Romney wins the nomination, he can not make a credible argument against Obamacare, and we get four more years of this.

and Mitt Romney can.

Mitt Romney lost to John McCain despite the support of the establishment and many conservatives who saw him as an alternative to the devil they knew well. McCain.

Hah! You wish.

I think I'm missing your point. Are you saying that Podhoretz doesn't think Santorum sounds too much like Lincoln to win, or are you yourself a member of the ‘need a government nanny in order to know right from wrong’ brigade.

The Romney RINOs are really reaching these days. Lotsa cheek and a hole in the middle.

I actually do agree with you.

It kind of sucks, because there IS a grain of truth to what Podhoretz is saying. Santorum is bouyed by the "not Romney" vote right now, but Gingrich is actually the stronger alternative to Obama in a general election.

The two of them could have been expected to govern pretty much the same way.

Screw happy and smiley and his social agenda. Yes it is important but we are at ground zero with this election. The economy, national defense and the future of our country are not being addressed by Santo. If he wants to make this election on social issues, we are screwed.

I don’t care if the Republican Elect has screwed a goat and they have tapes of it. We are at a cross road and need someone to take us out of this mess.

We need the Churchill of our time........NEWt!!!!!!!

Sorry but he is leading in the polls. Perhaps he might win anyway. But if he should, God wins. Remember that!

I don't disagree with you, but more than anything else we need "not Romney," because he can't win. Candidates who muddy the field like Paul and whoever comes in fourth place are first and foremost helping ensure a Romney nomination.

Sounds like Podhoretz is suggesting "sourpuss" as the new poli-sci synonym for "non-libertine". That's a bit of Clintonian social rot, by the way. Nobody ever said that stuff before Slick gladhanded his way into the Oval Orifice.

Meanwhile, I want a guy for president who smiles all the time and laughs at inappropriate moments, like Barky does. I need a cheerful president to, well, cheer me up -- like Kathy Lee and Hoda, like Joan Rivers, like Kelly Ripa.

Yeah, that's what will work!

I do too. You don't, Mr. Podhoretz?

There is no way that a man who expresses such a dark view of the American national character can win the presidency.

If you don't have a dark view of where we are at, you don't have a clue how bad it is.

My number 1 is Gingrich, who very much does know how bad it is. My number 2 is Santorum, who has almost as grim a view of things as I do.

I don't have time for guys like Podhoretz.
