The divide between those who live in rural areas and those from cities ruptured wide this past weekend across America in a debate over a provocative photo of California Fish and Game Commission President Dan Richards and a huge mountain lion he shot legally after an 8-hour hunt in Idaho.
Some comments on Facebook suggest that Richards should be the one hunted and shot, that he should be jailed, that is unethical to shoot anything you do not eat, and hunting of any kind is barbaric.
Most from rural backgrounds would see nothing wrong with the photo. Mountain lions are predators that kill lots of deer and other animals, including house pets and farm animals, and fewer of them means more of just about everything else. Same with coyotes. Since the hunt occurred in Idaho, where mountain lion hunting is legal, there was nothing illegal about anything Richards did.
The photo first appeared in Western Outdoor News at http://www.wonews.com/Blog.aspx?id=1646 as an innocuous sidebar to a column post by Paul Lebowitz, 2010 California Outdoor Writer of the Year. The Humane Society of the United States, an anti-hunting organization, then copied and circulated the photo around the country.

Looks like a baby to me. Down here in Southern Utah ones like that are too small to take.
Why is the photo disturbing? He hunted legally and killed his game.
“Warning: Photo may disturb some readers; photo of aborted fetus sparks debate over legal abortion.”
(a headline we’ll never see in the MSM)
Exactly. These large cats are at the top of the food chain. They are willing and sometimes eager to eat us or our children. If no one ever kills one, what happens to their population? They would eventually be prowling the suburbs.
I take it you have never came across one in the wild... I did while hunting deer ( and here in michigan the state says they do not exist ) if it would have turned on me I would have shot it without hesitation... big damn cat will eat you for lunch...
Would you source that claim, please?
“Yuk! Oh man, I shouldn’t have eaten that animal rights hippie, I’m going to be tasting patchouli and body odor for days now. BLECH!”

It’s not trophy hunting it’s predator control. Over population of ANY species throws off the balance of nature. If hunters didn’t do it the state would. In Alaska they allow wolf hunting out of airplanes because it’s impossible to reach their territories by any other vehicle much less on foot.
That is one beautiful cat.

Who would be disturbed by that photo? Its a picture of a dead lion ... and not all that gruesome a picture, all things considered.

The only state that I know that might even have open season on Liberals is Alaska... Texas did in the past but they all moved into Austin.
Meow. They appear to have gone further south than they were a decade ago. I wonder if they ever got around to telling house cats not to chase mice for sport. Perhaps their main concern is not the animals that are killed, but the ones that are only wounded and get away, or the orphaned litters that are too young to care for themselves. I would personally hate to hunt and be in this position.
If any animal is endangered the Dept of Fish and Wildlife wouldn’t have a season on it.
Look what kind of protection the Snail Darter gets.
Sorry, but you’re way off base here. This Richards fellow is a noble and courageous man. He traveled all the way from California to one of the most remote areas of Idaho, trudged 8 hours in snow and cold to kill this mountain lion so his dog, Mr. Snuggly, 977 miles away, could sleep safely tonight. And he isn’t smiling so broadly because he enjoys killing animals for the fun of killing animals. Nope, it’s just a natural reflex when the photographer told him to, “Say Cheese!”
Would they rather have it the other way around? If you read the comments at SFGate, you'll see that many uber-tolerant people from San Francisco really would rather have it the other way around.

He may have been referring to Ecc 6:2 A man to whom God hath given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.
Vanity/pride leads to envy, which leads to hate, theft, destruction, murder, war, and voting Democrat. Medieval theologian Thomas Aquinas said of Pride "inordinate self-love is the cause of every sin".
I’ve eaten cougar ham and it is fine, not much different than normal ham if at all. It was served at a potluck type dinner for a large hunting group and their families and many tried it.
For most it’s the thought of eating cat that stops them, there’s not a thing wrong with it in my view.
Yeah but I aint touchin a liberal before or after I shoot it.... They are nasty diesease infested bottom feeders... Icky idiots !
Stay safe Laz....
