The divide between those who live in rural areas and those from cities ruptured wide this past weekend across America in a debate over a provocative photo of California Fish and Game Commission President Dan Richards and a huge mountain lion he shot legally after an 8-hour hunt in Idaho.
Some comments on Facebook suggest that Richards should be the one hunted and shot, that he should be jailed, that is unethical to shoot anything you do not eat, and hunting of any kind is barbaric.
Most from rural backgrounds would see nothing wrong with the photo. Mountain lions are predators that kill lots of deer and other animals, including house pets and farm animals, and fewer of them means more of just about everything else. Same with coyotes. Since the hunt occurred in Idaho, where mountain lion hunting is legal, there was nothing illegal about anything Richards did.
The photo first appeared in Western Outdoor News at http://www.wonews.com/Blog.aspx?id=1646 as an innocuous sidebar to a column post by Paul Lebowitz, 2010 California Outdoor Writer of the Year. The Humane Society of the United States, an anti-hunting organization, then copied and circulated the photo around the country.

Thanks for shooting it!
Thanks for shooting it!
That dang kitten did not get that big on a suburban chic vegan diet! Lots of people’s private property made that kitty trophy size.
Funny, I can think of many targets to hunt in SF!
This photo disturbs me! It promotes deep feelings of jealousy!
Should make a nice rug!
He should not have shot it. He should have caught it and then released it at the headquarters of the Humane Society of the United States or PETA’s.
If only there was an open season on SF pedophiles.
I want to hunt and shoot liberals, then pose like this guy.
This photo disturbs me. . .it reminds me that I’m sitting in an office in front of my computer screen wishing I was out in nature with a gun, a bow and a fishing rod.
BTW, it is illegal to kill these cats in CA.
I’ll probably get some flack for this, but I think trophy hunting is worthless. If you’re going to hunt, don’t just take an animal’s life for no reason other than your own vanity. That’s really all trophy hunting is, an expression of vanity, which is a sin.
If you’re gonna hunt, put the animal to use and eat the damn thing.
Your common house cat would probably view you differently if it was that size too. None of this messing around rubbing on ankles to get a treat. You would BE the treat.
My theory is keep your business off facebook. You will be happier and nosy people can fret about other people.
The comments bashing this on other sites just go to show the depth of the stupidity and ignorance rampant in this country today.
Hunting is a fine pastime, and any thinking meat-eater should realize that an animal that lives a wild, free life and is then harvested by a hunter had it much better than an animal that was raised on a factory farm, then slaughtered. Further, wild animals typically don’t die nice, painless deaths. A clean kill from a hunter’s weapon is much preferable to starvation or being eaten alive by a pack of wolves.
Also I have to say...NICE cougar! :-)
P.S. I hope any of you supporting the “Humane Society”...stop.
The ex-kitty would make an awesome rug. Would that count?
Why the hell would that disturb anyone? I was expecting its head to be half blown off from the headline. It looks like the guy is holding a teddy bear.
KIlling animals is part of being human. Killing DANGEROUS animals even more so. These ninnies need to get on with life and quit wringing their hands over nothing.
