DETROIT -- The streak is alive -- and the Detroit Red Wings have three of their best players to thank for it.
Pavel Datsyuk broke a 1-1 tie by scoring with just 5.8 seconds left in regulation to give the Wings a 2-1 victory against the Nashville Predators on Friday night, extending their NHL-record home winning streak to 22 games.
With overtime looming, Nicklas Lidstrom controlled a bouncing puck in the neutral zone and backhanded a pass to Henrik Zetterberg, whose no-look pass caught Datsyuk in stride just as he hit the Nashville blue line.
Datsyuk took over from there, stickhandling around defenseman Ryan Suter before wristing a 15-footer over the left shoulder of goalie Pekka Rinne (29 saves) for his 16th goal -- sending the crowd into hysterics.
Johan Franzen also scored for the Wings (40-17-2), while Nick Spaling found the back of the net for the Predators (33-19-6) -- who came into the game with a stellar 13-2-2 record against Central Division opponents. They've now lost three of four against the Red Wings, though, including twice during Detroit's improbable streak.
The Wings matched the streak of 22 straight home wins by the Boston Bruins of 1929-30 and '30-31, the longest multi-season stretch in NHL history. They go for No. 23 when San Jose comes to Joe Louis Arena on Sunday.

Go Rangers!!!
If anyone lives in the Dallas area, next weekend starts the North Texas Youth Hockey playoffs. Come out to Allen to see the Jr. rampage Midget Minor team get back on its feet and advance to the second round.
Say hi to coach Andy.
Nice trap. Led to a turnover.
The hit was awesome also.
That’s quite a streak. I’ll say two things about streaks like that:
A: They often lead to great things - the Canes won 13 in a row in the 05-06 season and they ended up Stanley Cup champions.
B: When they end, they often end in a thud. Ours ended 9-0 to the Atlanta Thrashers. Kovalchuk had 4 I think. Looked like he was going to score every time he had the puck.
It's a great way to prevent depression from setting in over the primary race, so I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts!
We were babysitting and I was overruled so we could watch movies for the kids...but I think I have it DVR’d. I hope.
Put me on the hockey ping list please.
(hey, bring the Cup back where it belongs — THE SOUTHEAST!!)
When ties were possible, they were seen as either positive or negative depending on how they were being referenced in a team's performance in the NHL. Winning streaks and losing streaks didn't get as much attention because they often weren't very long. A team that was doing well was often described in terms of their "unbeaten streak" (ties included with the wins), while a team that was doing poorly was measured by a "winless streak" (ties included with the losses).
I still think the NHL has some work to do when it comes to overtime games. Even if they don't want to have ties (and I agree with that, for the most part), I'm convinced that the shootout is a bad idea.
Ugh, don’t remind us! We watched our game and they shouldn’t have even HAD the puck since the refs chose to ignore two violations in the last 15 seconds. No icing or hook call, aside from the various holds throughout the game, typical home cooking from the Joe.
I’d be happy to add you to the ping list!
Welcome aboard!
FTA: “Some have suggested that Detroit's streak should wear an asterisk, since the Wings have won three times in overtime and once during a shootout, but don't try selling that theory inside an NHL dressing room.”
In afterthought, I'm not persuaded by the argument about diluting the gene pool of players by the explosion of the number of NHL teams since the “original six”. These guys are far better athletes with greater skills and equipment than those old timers. However, these space age hockey sticks that break all the time certainly need upgrading.
