The Secretary of the Navy announced on Friday that a new littoral combat ship will be named after former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.).
The announcement comes the same day that President Obama signed the last piece of legislation sponsored by Giffords, a bill aimed at reducing drug trafficking along the American borders with Canada and Mexico.
Giffords, who recently stepped down from office, was the target of a shooting rampage in early January 2011.
The name this ship bears and the story represented by that name will inspire all those who come in contact with her, said Navy Secretary Ray Mabus at a naming ceremony at the Pentagon Friday.
Giffords appeared at the ceremony with her husband, former Rep. Ike Skelton (D-Mo.) and Roxanna Green, the mother of Christina Taylor-Green, the 9-year-old girl who was killed at the Giffords shooting last year.
Mabus said that Green would be the sponsor of the USS Gabrielle Giffords.
The ship named after Giffords is a littoral combat ship, a smaller ship designed for operations close to the shore. The USS Gabrielle Giffords is the Navys 10th LCS ship.

I complained about the other as well. I also complain regularly to my hubby about our beloved university putting up statues of coaches, especially living ones.
Just wait until they name the USS Obama.
I’m sure her husband is all for this.
What is it with the deification of this woman?!!? She experienced a tragedy. She's a victim. She did nothing heroic. We should be raising to hero status and celebrating the guy who stopped the shooter, not the victim!
shuuuusssssh...there is talk about the USS Ted Kennedy |
Well, if you axe me, it make perfect sense if the ship’s homeport is in Arizona.
No kidding, it already has a huge hole in it's side. This makes me sick.
I heard it's already been launched.
Well, she did serve on the House Armed Services Committee, but I don’t think that serving two-and-a-half terms in the House warrants the naming an LCS.
Nor does getting shot warrant it.
You are so right. Mabus is the idiot that wants/recommended a cruiser named after that other crook John Murtha
It should have been named after somebody heroic who died for this country. I presume it was the idea of the Secretary of Navy.
Agreed, Good Grief! However, there is one bright spot; i.e. this action is illustrative of the values of the members of this administration; i.e. An obscure congresswoman is shot by a psychotic, is severely brain damaged and as a result of that damage is forced to resign; therefore, we name a United States Naval vessel after her.
Maybe they oughta name the ship “it’s” in an(other futile) effort to teach the native speakers the difference between “it’s” and “its”?
This should give Diane Sawyer another dozen or two potential opportunities for more Giffords worship stories.
Anyone who did not realize that the Ford, Reagan, and HW Bush made the Clinton and the Obama inevitable is an idiot.
Naming ships after politicians was always a very bad idea.
I well remember “Jonestown” and the brutal reality of where the phrase, “drinking the Kool-Aid” originated. As I recall they had to deploy a GRREG Unit from the post where I worked to help process all the bodies. Ugly work ...especially in the tropics.
The current crop of Marxists running the Dem Party would be more likely to name a ship after Jim Jones.
