NEW YORK – A six-year-old Bronx boy died after his father gave him methadone, believing the liquid was cough medicine.

The boy's mother, 36-year-old Raquel DeLeon, hid her methadone inside a DayQuil bottle in their apartment on East 147th Street in the south Bronx.

On Saturday, when Carlos Rios Jr. fell ill, his father gave him a teaspoon of the liquid, believing it was cough medicine, police said.

Soon after taking the dose, the boy complained of dizziness. His father told him to lie down, but grew concerned after his son became unresponsive.

The father immediately called 911 and medics rushed the child to Lincoln Hospital. He was later transferred to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, where he died.

On Thursday, police arrested DeLeon, who has two prior drug busts, and charged her with reckless endangerment.

The mother was arrested, not the father. Read the NY Post’s article here: http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/bronx/boy_dies_after_taking_methadone_v0zRTlteMacgcLQowZudjJ

It’s not. They arrested the mother.

There was a story a few years back where a mother kept her methadone in her child’s sippy cup. The child drank it. The results were entirely predictable and sadly tragic.

Another great argument for legalizing drugs — NOT!

No surprises there.

Can someone explain how legalizing drugs would stop this from happening

She wouldn’t need to hide it in a Dayquil bottle?

When methadone was first starting to be prescribed for heroin addicts in the early 70's there was a rash of children's deaths when the kids mistakenly found their parents methadone in the fridge.
Because of this most meth clinics in NYC started mixing their methadone with an orange food coloring in the belief it would be easier for children, and others to identify the methadone for what it really was.
Turned out there were even more children's deaths because of this since the methadone now looked just like orange juice.
BTW: They still use the orange food coloring to this day.

Methadone is for replacement for a Heroin addiction ...

It's also used as a pain reliever.

I know a guy whose wife has a variety of medical problems causing severe pain, for which she is prescribed methadone.

It would be better and more cost effective just to eliminate the addicts.

Can someone please explain why the illegalization of (some) drugs didn't prevent this from happening?

Methadone is for replacement for a Heroin addiction Big L libertarians tell us it's our right to use drugs but never look at the consequences

And rat poison is used to kill rats. Yet I'm sure that there are some idiots out there who do stupid things with it, like storing it in their pantries, where it can be mistaken for, say, flour.

The consequences of the War on (some) Drugs - both in terms of the loss of human life, and the erosion of our civil liberties - are worse than the consequences of legalization would be.

Regards,

A "Big L" Libertarian

So presumably, when you hear about a child getting killed due to misuse of a firearm, you use this to argue that guns should be banned?
