There was a story a few years back where a mother kept her methadone in her child’s sippy cup. The child drank it. The results were entirely predictable and sadly tragic.

Can someone explain how legalizing drugs would stop this from happening
Methadone is for replacement for a Heroin addiction Big L libertarians tell us it's our right to use drugs but never look at the consequences

When methadone was first starting to be prescribed for heroin addicts in the early 70's there was a rash of children's deaths when the kids mistakenly found their parents methadone in the fridge.
Because of this most meth clinics in NYC started mixing their methadone with an orange food coloring in the belief it would be easier for children, and others to identify the methadone for what it really was.
Turned out there were even more children's deaths because of this since the methadone now looked just like orange juice.
BTW: They still use the orange food coloring to this day.

Liquid Methadone is distributed in {child proof} bottles that are exceedingly difficult even for adults to open. The only reason an addict would switch containers would be if she was selling it or sharing it.
