WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama today will free 10 states from the strict and sweeping requirements of the No Child Left Behind law, giving leeway to states that promise to improve how they prepare and evaluate students, The Associated Press has learned.

The first 10 states to receive the waivers are Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oklahoma and Tennessee. The only state that applied for the flexibility and did not get it, New Mexico, is working with the administration to get approval, a White House official told the AP.

Hmmm... Wonder why not NM? Could it be that we have a conservative Hispanic lady as Governor who is shaking up the education system and taking teachers and the bloated school administrators to task? And who wants the legislature to pass a statewide law to prevent social promotion from 3rd to 4th grade if kids can't perform at 3rd grade levels? Hmmm...

The Federal Government should NOT be legislating requirements to local schools, PERIOD! I don’t have a problem if they establish voluntary guidelines/standards.

I wonder if I can get a Presidential ‘waiver’ for any laws I dont feel like obeying?

This is even better than repealing the law! and a lot faster. I bet with some imagination they could ‘waver’ new laws into existance!

Like how about a ‘waiver’ of your right to vote if you are a Republican.

NCLB needs to be repealed, the Federal Department of Education abolished, and the function of education returned to the state and local government level, period.

Mrs. Slim, until she recently retired, worked in the Moriarty Schools. She said there was a decline in performance when the NCLB became law of the land.
