Santorum Delivers a GOP Stunner [Shoe-String Budget: Clean Sweep: Hat-Trick: Wins MN; MO, and CO!]

Santorum Delivers a GOP Stunner Former Senator Wins in Minnesota, Missouri; Romney Campaign Plays Down Nonbinding Contests

By NEIL KING JR. And DANNY YADRON

DENVER—Rick Santorum jolted the Republican presidential race Tuesday by winning nominating contests in Missouri and Minnesota, puncturing Mitt Romney's claim to be the unstoppable front-runner.

Mr. Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, was running neck and neck with Mr. Romney in preliminary returns from Colorado, a state Mr. Romney won by a wide margin in 2008.

With about 70% of the Colorado vote counted, Mr. Santorum had 38%, to 36% for Mr. Romney. Four years ago, Mr. Romney carried Colorado with 60% of the vote.

Mr. Santorum's twin victories in the Midwest will give his campaign a much-needed burst of momentum and may stir doubt about Mr. Romney's abilities to woo conservatives to his side in important electoral states such as Missouri. So far, Mr. Romney has won in states where he has devoted significant campaign time and advertising dollars.

Mr. Santorum won 55% of the Missouri vote, while Mr. Romney followed with 25%. Texas Rep. Ron Paul was trailing with 12%. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich wasn't on the Missouri ballot.

Mr. Santorum's Missouri victory margin of almost 75,000 votes over Mr. Romney was nearly 29,000 more than Mr. Romney's combined Iowa and Nevada total.

While the Tuesday results didn't directly award any of the delegates needed to claim the GOP nomination, they showed voters rejecting Mr. Romney even in states where he had performed well four years ago.

Mr. Romney had carried Minnesota in 2008 but placed third there on Tuesday. With 85% of precincts in, Mr. Santorum had 45% of the vote, while Mr. Paul had 27%. Mr. Romney had 17% of the vote and Mr. Gingrich claimed 11%.

I have been a “lurker” for years. I signed up today so I could post this link. For those who think that Rick Santorum does not have the passion, skill, intelligence or spine to take this fight to Obama and crush him, please have a look. Thank you for your consideration. God Bless America!

That was just simply awesome!

Thank you.

You couldn’t be more wrong...he’s the only one to show SHARP CONTRAST to O’Jackass.

I agree Santorum would be dead meat against O, so I’d love a brokered convention.

Seriously though...Santorum is a lot tougher than most people give him credit for being. Think about all the major celebrities/pols/sports figures etc. over the past two decades who have made off-the-cuff remarks about the homosexual community and have either had their careers destroyed or have cowered and apologized as they walked back their comments.

Those very same pink nazis have been gunning for Santorum for the better part of two decades, and apart from google bombing his last name, have damaged little more than their own credibility.

Rush won’t say it outright, but he’s sure making a great conservative case for Santorum today.

The telling thing with these results is the amount Mitt has lost support from 2008. HEY R-e - do you get it yet? ANYBODY but Mitt!! Let’s go for a brokered convention and Sarah will lead the way against the Obamination.

As a Pennsylvania pro-lifer who poured his blood, sweat, and tears into Rick's second (successful) senatorial race, I will say I am one whose heart was broken by that endorsement of Specter. I refused to support Rick's third campaign in anyway except with my vote.

However, in this presidential election, I've had to let those hard feelings go. Just like I had to let Newt's record of serial adultery go. I see people on here complaining about the Specter debacle but my assessment is that the folks doing the Specter fingerpointing have a strong preference for someone other than Rick Santorum in the race and they're trying to rile up old distasteful feelings.

I doubt they ever felt the personal loss that I felt over that endorsement. Check my posting history. I haven't let too many opportunities pass to bash Rick over the head for his support of Specter. If I can let it go, anyone can let it go.

I am currently trying to figure out who is more electable - Newt or Rick? My wife is solidly in Santorum's camp. I'm probably leaning Santorum, but if Newt's got an edge coming into the PA primary, I'm not going to risk Romney winning by voting for Santorum if he's going to be an also ran.

I would post all the Gingrich big gov. links that if it came down too it Gingrich is is far worse but it is not allowed on this forum. So you and I cannot have a fair debate because all Gingrich postings that do not bow to him are forbidden. We have got no real non DC insider. We have no political savior.None of them are perfect.I could post links about the furthest right conservative that are none too pleasant to see wanting to be Romney’s VP.

Gingrich may be the one that puts country first and bows out.

The other thing I'd like to mention about Santorum's support of Specter is Santorum's obvious discomfort with it at the time. I remember seeing (on TV) Rick sitting on the stage at a Specter rally and looking like a duck out of water. It was painful. I believe I called him a puppet on a string, responding to the commands of his party.

We don't have to worry about that anymore. Santorum (like Newt) won't owe anyone in the Republican establishment any favors. Either one of these guys will really be able to do right by the country.

You are ignoring the fact that the reason Santorum supported Arlen Specter over Pat Toomey was, that Specter was the chairman for the judicial and the nominations of Samuel Anthony Alito, Jr., Associate Justice, and John G. Roberts, Jr., Chief Justice of the United States, who were both nominated by President Bush was at stake. With out Arlen Specter, they would have never made it.
