Nowhere is the haughtiness of American politics better displayed than with our dueling former Speakers. The latest love spat between Newt Gingrich and Nancy Pelosi illuminates America’s sorry political state. She keeps coyly insinuating she knows something and will time its release for maximum damage.
It appears Mr. Gingrich is finished anyway, and I’m no fan. His infidelities trouble me. His overarching concern seems to be Newt Gingrich, a not uncommon trait in politicians, but hardly the attribute of a transcendent leader. His prior associations with Mrs. Pelosi promoting Cap and Trade and frequent policy flip-flops reveal an unscrupulous opportunist. While ultimately exonerated of ethics charges, questions linger.
Gingrich highlights what ails the GOP. On his watch Republicans preaching fiscal restraint backslid into apostasy by bedding K Street. After serving as Speaker, Gingrich represented Freddie Mac and hopped on the Cap and Trade bandwagon. It’s hard to reconcile Gingrich with principled conservative beliefs.
Gingrich’s recent incendiary attacks on Republican rivals have likely harmed his party’s chances. Last year, he blasted Paul Ryan for “right-wing social engineering” and more recently ridiculed Romney over profitable business practices. The incessant debates have devolved into what Pat Buchanan coined a “circular firing squad.” The liberal media eagerly reloads their arsenals.

Newt is the only bold candidate that inspires me to get up and vote, if I have to hold my nose for someone else, it’s only because the Democrat economy has been that bad.

There are hundreds at FR who are convinced that Newt is the salvation for conservatives even though after resigning from the House he supported numerous liberal initiatives: the global warming scam, cap and trade, Medicare D, individual mandates, amnesty and Dede Scuzzafava. He praised RomneyCare and ObamaCare. It matters little to them that they can not name a single conservative initiative that Gingrich aggressively supported during that time or that he claimed the Reagan era was over and that he was “Wilsonian” and a “progressive” - his words, not mine.

Maybe it doesn’t matter because the author is a Freeper. But it’s still crap.
Are conservatives such wusses that they’re so gravely offended by this answer from Newt where he spelled out his specific objection to the Ryan plan? What is so offensive about his simple, clear, honest opinion?

I think we need a national conversation to get to a better Medicare system with more choices for seniors. But there are specific things you can do . At the Center for Health Transformation , which I helped found, we published a book called “ Stop Paying the Crooks .” We thought that was a clear enough, simple enough idea, even for Washington . We — between Medicare and Medicaid , we pay between $70 billion and $120 billion a year to crooks. And IBM has agreed to help solve it, American Express has agreed to help solve it, Visa ‘s agreed to help solve it. You can’t get anybody in this town to look at it. That’s, that’s almost $1 trillion over a decade. So there are things you can do to improve Medicare .
MR. GREGORY: But not what Paul Ryan is suggesting, which is completely changing Medicare .
REP. GINGRICH: I, I think that, I think, I think that that is too big a jump. I think what you want to have is a system where people voluntarily migrate to better outcomes, better solutions, better options, not one where you suddenly impose upon the — I don’t want to — I’m against Obamacare , which is imposing radical change , and I would be against a conservative imposing radical change .
He never said the Reagan era was over. Produce the quote or shut your lying mouth.

IT DIDN'T WORK
Newt wrote a whole book “Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less” during that time which led to the “Drill, Baby, Drill” rallying cry. He testified against cap and trade and against Al Gore. You’re just spreading lies and spin like a Romneybot.

That’s putting it very nicely, Bill. You might have said she couldn’t manage a two-stall loo, which is about what congress has become.
I for one agree with you about Newt’s remarks probably damaging Republican chances. It almost seems that the party is intentionally trying to shoot itself in the foot early on.

Newt said he was PROGRESSIVE when it came to reforming government and fighting corruption. Do you realize when you don’t paste links to the actual quotes, people know you’re lying and spinning?

I read the article even though it’s crap. I didn’t see who he’s for but I suspect it would be Romney as he openly attacks Newt and blames him for the negativity and says he may be the blame if obama wins re-election. He never once mentioned the negative campaign launched by the Romney and his PACS, much less the lies and distortions from the Romney campaign. This article smells like the entire Romney campaign.
