PICKET: What is keeping Santorum from his full campaign potential?
The Washington Times Water Cooler ^ | 2/6/11 | Kerry Picket

----excerpt----

Mr. Santorum has been accused of being a “big government” conservative, but so has Gov. Romney and that has not hurt Mr. Romney’s front-runner status. Sen. Santorum’s biggest weakness is more than likely the perception among GOP voters that he is thought of as more of a lieutenant than a general. Former Vice President Dan Quayle had a similar perception issue with voters.

Unfortunately for Mr. Santorum, he is the guy many believe is given orders by some silver haired veteran and later carries them out competently. With this in mind, it does not help that he served in the lower chamber under a "grandiose" thinking, scene stealing former speaker that he is currently running against for the White House, Newt Gingrich.

He is a one-trick pony. He is identified as pro-life, but is a socialist on fiscal affairs. Most Catholics are made in this mould. So it is not surprising. Actually, I heard something very similar about Catholics on the Rush Limbaugh show today which was guest hosted by Mark Steyn.

Well, Santorum is being supported by more Evangelicals than Catholics (he’s not popular among Catholics), so I don’t think Mark Steyn’s erroneous depiction of Catholics as “socialists” is the reason. He’s a Romney supporter anyway.

Out of the four we have left, Santorum comes closest to the conservative credentials I am looking for, but my God he is a bore. Love or hate Newt and Mitt, at least they grab peoples attention at the debates, press conferences and stump speeches, not to mention the media spotlight.

Maybe what we’re seeing from him IS his full presidential campaign potential.

Let me clarify that Mark Steyn did not use the word socialist but portrayed them as supporters of big government programs and that they get funding from such programs. He also pointed out that they were fine with Obamacare until the abortion and contraceptive issues came along.

I like Rick. He may, in fact, be the closest thing we have seen to a true compassionate conservative. But for somehow he always reminds me of this guy:

Have you really looked deeply into his “conservative credentials” past the social issues and past his claims? It ain’t that great. Really. It’s not.

Guess I didn’t look deep enough into him. That info is good to know when I vote at my caucus in March.

Pretty obvious that we are stuck with even worse choices than we had in 2008.

Newt may not be perfect, but he's not nearly as bad a choice as McCain was. Not even close.
