FEBRUARY 5, 2012 Conservatives Cautious in Embracing Romney
By Eric Morath
Evangelical Christians and tea-party supporters, key members of the Republican base, will continue take their time in warming up to GOP front-runner Mitt Romney, a key conservative leader said on Sunday.
There is not going to be that enthusiasm among the base for Mr. Romney, said Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, a conservative Christian organization.
The focus now is on the House and the Senate and expanding conservative majorities in Congress, he said Sunday on CNNs State of the Union, suggesting some conservatives are growing weary of the presidential primary fight and turning their attention to congressional races.
Mr. Perkins headed a meeting of social conservative leaders in Texas last month that backed Rick Santorums campaign. But after a strong showing in Iowa, Mr. Santorum has struggled. He finished a disappointing fourth in Saturdays Nevada caucuses.
Mr. Perkins said Mr. Romney was preferable to President Barack Obama, but added that it could take until the Republican convention to see support for Mr. Romney solidify among social conservatives.
Former Republican House Majority Leader Dick Armey also showed tepid support for Mr. Romney, but conceded that the ex-Massachusetts governor appears likely to take the nomination.
Were not going to get a reliable, small-government conservative out of this nominating process, Mr. Armey said on CNN. (snip)
Mr. Armey said he doesnt see former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who appears to be fading, building fresh momentum as the Republican primary race continues.
Mr. Gingrich is taking a second-rate campaign and turning it into a first-rate vendetta, said Mr. Armey, who was a Republican leader alongside Mr. Gingrich in the 1990s. I don t think Newt will be able to replicate that magic moment he had in South Carolina.

Most folks I know will NEVER warm up to Romney. They don’t like him and feel that he is trying to buy the nomination.
I wouldn’t touch romney with a ten foot pole. If Gingrich can’t fight the slime, then we need to figure out something else.
But no romney. If the GOP manages to push him in, then they are FINISHED. Time to throw them in the trash along with the Whigs. They had a pretty good run of 150 years, but the last 50 of those have been mostly pretty feeble, and going down hill fast since Reagan.
“Cautious” is not the word that springs to mind.
Cautious???
Any "true" conservative wouldn't give a plug nickle for that Massachusetts socialist!

WSJObama beating the “Willard Is Inevitable!” drum.
They are so desperate to not have Newt as the nominee.
This Catholic conservative, and his wife, will not now, nor EVER vote for Romney. It’s out of the question. And if the RNC settles on him, I may very well be done with them. I can never vote for democrats. Doesn’t look good. But I will not settle for another RINO. The “never again” I whispered to myself after voting for McCain still holds, always will. I believe in absolutes. That is one.
"Cautious is not the word that springs to mind."
How about: Conservatives Revulsed at the Slightest Thought of getting within 10 feet of Willard Your Worst Nightmare...?
If you can embrace Romney then your either a republican or a moderate or a liberal.. You sure as heck aren’t a conservative.. So tired of the term conservative being hijacked by the not conservatives....
Mccain 2, the sequel
There are so many things that turn me off about Romney. One of them is his, ‘when elected, I am going to this’ promise that he won’t keep
Are the Establishment types doing this because they want Romney or because they hate Newt? You would think they would embrace the man many of them owe their jobs to with open arms. Maybe Newt really is an A-hole when you have to deal with him all the time. That’s all I can figure because Romney has so little to offer besides a massive amount of his own money to spend, which didn’t help Huntsman who came from similar circumstances.
Why would anyone who calls themselves conservative vote for that liberal Romney?
Either they are not conservative or they are idiots or maybe both.
Of course he’s trying to buy the nomination. They all do. Do you not think Newt would try to buy it if he had the money?

I would be cautious embracing a cactus, a porcupine, a shark, or a cobra. But Romney? I wish he was moderate enough that I could embrace him cautiously.
“Tepid” toward Romney? How about “revulsion.” That’s what I have and more time won’t make it better.
I would not vote for Romney either. But I have to wonder, why didn't Newt try to raise money early on? That's how you get elected in America.
Im absolutely convinced that Newt Gingrich is the junkyard dog we need to rip Obama a new one and send him running back to his Chicago slime pit with his tail between his legs. Newt has plenty of DC experience as Speaker, executive ability from his many enterprises, and a silver tongue thats razor sharp! Hes fast on his feet, delivers it straight up with no hemming and hawwing, and is often witty. His work with American Solutions was very impressive and as weve seen recently, he is able to put into words what the vast majority of Americans really believe. His fevered brain also has plenty of ideas for making government work better for taxpayers. Is Newt pure as the driven snow? No - none of the presidential candidates are in line for sainthood. Whatever Newts much-touted baggage, it pales next to Obamas habitual lying and outright corruption - and unlike Obama, Newt is 100% American. Newt is like Larry the Cable Guy: send him to DC and hell Git er done for all of us. Junkyard dogs are not show dogs, but theyll save your bacon! Go git im, Newt!
