DO AMERICAS failed gun policies contribute to the terrible violence in Mexico? Alejandro A. Poire Romero makes a compelling case that the answer is yes.
Law enforcement officials in both countries acknowledge that 70 to 80 percent of the traceable guns seized in Mexico can be tracked to the United States. Mr. Poire Romero, a top Mexican national security and criminal justice official, offers additional evidence that the United States has been an enabler of the violence.
In 2005 roughly one-third of the seized guns were assault weapons. Today, according to Mr. Poire Romero, assault weapons represent 60 to 65 percent of the guns confiscated by Mexican authorities. The assault-weapons ban in the United States lapsed in 2004.
The significant rise in violence and the increase in the number of public officials killed in Mexico coincides with lifting of the assault weapons ban, Mr. Poire Romero said.
Mr. Poire Romero met with Post editors and reporters on the day that Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. was again being grilled on Capitol Hill about Operation Fast and Furious, during which U.S. law enforcement agents, in order to trace weapons to higher-ups in a criminal enterprise, failed to interdict guns bought by suspected straw purchasers. The operation, a version of which was undertaken during the George W. Bush administration, was deeply flawed; some 2,000 weapons are unaccounted for. Weapons traced to Fast and Furious purchases were found on the scene of the 2010 killing of a Border Patrol agent. These revelations led to the resignation of the U.S. attorney in Phoenix and reassignment of the acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Anyone who buys that line deserves to be a slave.
Notice that the Posties still won't say that about 99% of guns found involved in crimes in Mexico CANNOT BE TRACED.
This concerns only the TRACEABLE GUNS ~ most of them provided directly by DOJ (Holder) to Mexican Narcotrafficantes.
This is why they've got to be kept under observation, and possibly investigated, to see if any of them are worth prosecuting here, or maybe just shipped to Mexico to be charged.
Damned black rifles again...
They still push forward with a lie.
The DOJ was the entity which either broke the law or directly suborned such acts. The very government which passed laws against selling to straw buyers pushed that, knowing where the guns would end up.
If this kind of crap doesn't indicate the whole purpose of "Fast and Furious" was to push more gun control, nothing does.
And why isn't anyone discussing where the Republican candidates stand on this vital issue?
In the real world outside of newsrooms, this editorial would be titled “Poor cultural standards and tolerance of corruption allow murder and mayhem to become commonplace in Mexico.”
BS, they never intended to interdict any of the weaspons and can't show where they had.
F&F is not a failed program. They might not like the way it has turned out, but it did exactly what it was supposed to do.
even if it wasn’t a propaganda lie,,, i just do not care. My second amendment right are not conditional depending on how they affect other nations.
My free speech rights and open internet also has negative impacts on China,,,
And last,, does this Mexican REALLY want to get into a discussion about how Mexicos policies affect the USA negatively?
“Law enforcement officials in both countries acknowledge that 70 to 80 percent of the traceable guns seized in Mexico can be tracked to the United States.”
Well...if that’s the starting point, then the conclusion is indisputable.
What about the ones that are NOT traceable? Then, let’s compare raw numbers.
Until then, shut yer pie hole.
Just like BOR...with the leftists, the spin never stops.
I see you are letting them have it in the comments section.
Go get ‘em!
Gunwalker Denial Ping and Charlie Brown AAUGH! Ping!
so this is the article that was supposed to run earlier if fast and furious wasnt discovered?
A hundred years ago we would have just sent the army across the border to deal with the problem.

This propoganda article was designed to run after the Fast and Furious program was underway, but the editors did not expect that the Fast and Furious program would be exposed and its managers subjected to Senate scrutiny. Now that a few months have passed and it looks like the managers are going to get away with it, the W Post is restarting the propoganda part of the program.
Can someone tell me how many lives were saved by the assault weapons ban?
Corrected the headline for spelling and grammar.
The drug cartels use fully automatic weapons stolen from police and military throughout Central and South America, in addition to imported Chinese weapons.
They don’t give a damn about the semi-auto’s available from the U.S.!
Going full circle. Back to the future. Ping.
