Komen apologizes for 'recent decisions,' pledges to continue funding Planned Parenthood
Dallas Morning News ^ | 2/3/2012 | Tom Benning

Komen for the Cure just released the following statement from Nancy Brinker and the Susan G. Komen Board of Directors:

We want to apologize to the American public for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women's lives.

The events of this week have been deeply unsettling for our supporters, partners and friends and all of us at Susan G. Komen. We have been distressed at the presumption that the changes made to our funding criteria were done for political reasons or to specifically penalize Planned Parenthood. They were not.

Our original desire was to fulfill our fiduciary duty to our donors by not funding grant applications made by organizations under investigation. We will amend the criteria to make clear that disqualifying investigations must be criminal and conclusive in nature and not political. That is what is right and fair.

Our only goal for our granting process is to support women and families in the fight against breast cancer. Amending our criteria will ensure that politics has no place in our grant process. We will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood, and preserve their eligibility to apply for future grants, while maintaining the ability of our affiliates to make funding decisions that meet the needs of their communities.

I got a Freepmail from someone I don’t know saying something like: “Komen was right to reverse. Abortion is a decision between a woman and her doctor. The government should stay out of it!”

Did anyone else get one of these? Was this a RAT troll? What on earth does a charity giving or not giving money to PP have anything to do with government? Very strange!

BTW, the link in “Breaking News” goes to the closed thread, not this active one. Thanks!

I had a cancer scare last year, yes, in my chest, yes, Susan Komen related, I defintely donated money last year

never again

Wow, I didn't realize that... hope it was nothing more than a "scare", and you are healthy, Race!

We've donated to the American Cancer Society but never to Komen. And that will remain the case until they separate themselves from abortion providers like Planned Parenthood.

Being a victim (of sorts) of something other than breast cancer, I prefer to earmark my donations to Chronic Fatigue and Immune Dysfunction Syndrome, which affects more people every year that breast cancer and heart disease combined.

As it stands now, with the CDC, “the squeaky wheel gets the grease” and monies that could go for research into the causes and possible cure of CFIDS (insidious, nasty disease) we get what’s left after AIDS and breast cancer research.

If you need enlightenment on the disease and how it affects victims and their families and friends, go to cfids.org/symptoms. A lot of us could have been productive a lot longer than we were.

Great post, and bravo to you for your donations to charities for Chronic Fatigue and Immune Dysfunction Syndrome. I know some people who suffer from the awful disease of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome... I would love to see a cure.

Side note: MLB is big on promoting Komen and having those pink ribbon days.....

Another reason I’d like to get rid of Selig.

Thanks for that reminder, FRiend. I'm so sick of those dopey pink bats every year. Endless advertising for Komen and their buddies at PP.

I like your tagline, by the way! ;-)

How much money would they save, I wonder, if they did not try to make all of the participants in their events feel so “special” with the t-shirts, the headbands, the tote bags, etc.

You make a lot of good points in #113, Bigg Red. I think all the pink stuff is more about promoting the Komen organization itself than actually finding a cure for cancer.

Why not just give to the American Cancer Society rather than giving to Komen (thus funding Planned Parenthood)?

Aw, shucks!

I fought long and hard, just to have the diagnosis put in print on my medical records, but during that fight, the disease had progressed beyond what could be cured, if there was a cure. It wasn’t diagnosed because no one can diagnose a disease they don’t believe even exists!!

As it is, I am constantly in a state of relapse and remission, but even my remissions have little relapses. I still have to choose my battles.

CFIDS is ugly and deserves more attention than it is getting.

Sorry, but I feel the same way about the American Cancer Society. I often wonder if they are unmotivated to help achieve the goal of obliterating the disease upon which their very existence depends. Lordy, I hate feeling so cynical....

Good point, and I'm cynical as well, I'm afraid.

We've donated a few (very) old cars to the American Cancer Society over the years. I hope the $$ went toward a cure or a treatment to help cancer patients.

Sorry about my post to you in #214, Bigg Red. I don't know what happened - I used the wrong quote to comment to you!

This is how my post should have gone:

0.058% of PP’s funding comes from Komen.

What a joke.

No problem. I have done that before, too. I wish FR had a way of removing a post the way Facebook does; I would have been able to take back a lot of typos over the years.

Hope all is going well with your, FRiend.
