Florida businessman, 48, adopts adult girlfriend, 42, as his daughter

A 48-year-old Florida businessman has legally adopted his 42-year-old girlfriend as his daughter in what one attorney is calling an attempt to shield assets in a wrongful death civil suit that has entered a "legal twilight zone," according to a judge.

John Goodman, who founded the International Polo Club Beach in Wellington, legally adopted Heather Hutchins on Oct. 13 in Miami-Dade County, according to a court order by Circuit Court Judge Glenn Kelley.

"The events which serve as the grounds for the relief sought by the Plaintiffs border on the surreal and take the Court into a legal twilight zone," Kelley wrote in an order granting attorneys for Lili and William Wilson the right to information concerning Goodman's adoption. " … While there is nothing unusual about an adult adoption, the critical fact here is that Ms. Hutchins is Mr. Goodman's 42-year-old girlfriend. Ms. Hutchins has testified in a deposition that she started dating Mr. Goodman in 2009, and it appears to be undisputed that they are still in a relationship today."

The unusual legal move was exposed in court documents pertaining to a wrongful death civil suit in connection to a February 2010 crash that killed 23-year-old Scott Patrick Wilson. According to Palm Beach County Sheriff's reports, Goodman ran a stop sign and fatally struck Wilson. A civil trial date has been set for March 27, according to attorney Scott Smith, who represents William Wilson, the victim's father.

You know what’s next, don’t you? He’s going to make an honest woman out of Heather. And marry her.

Is there a law that you can’t marry your girlfriend? Even if she is your adopted daughter?

(yeesh!)

Is incest legal in FL? (I would imagine it is).

The left (at the behest of their “father”) has been fighting the traditional concept of family for decades,

so any of these weird configurations is not out of the realm of possibility once you reject the “common” understanding of “mother”, “father”, “wife”, “husband”, “children”, etc.

How does this work as an asset shelter? I suspect that this may be unique to Florida.

Only if they have "the mark" - otherwise it would be illegal.

The article says his wealth is in trusts.

“Judge Kelley has previously ruled that a trust established for Goodman’s two minor children could not be considered as part of his financial worth if a jury awarded damages to the Wilsons. It remains unclear, according to a Jan. 26 order by Kelly, whether Hutchins will in fact be recognized as a legitimate beneficiary under the children’s trust.”

I remember reading about this accident a few years ago. Goodman is a large A/C manufacture company here in Houston. Appears from the article the judge ruled the children trust is not part of his assets. So Goodman adopts his girlfriend and gives remaining assets to the trust for the benefit of his girlfriend?

My first question is why isn’t Goodman serving time for manslaughter. If he was serving time he would be more open to settle.

Good question. FTA...

Goodman, who reportedly had a blood-alcohol level of more than twice the legal limit in Florida several hours after the crash, also faces a criminal trial relating to the fatal 2010 crash. He is due to appear in court on March 6 on charges of DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a crash. He faces up to 30 years if convicted.

The Prosecutor, Goodman and his attorneys, and attorneys for the deceased victim should all meet in a conference room. Goodman should be told that he can get a suspended sentence with no jail time. IF he settles with the victim's family for what they want. And if he refuses to settle?

He gets the 30 year sentence. His call.

since Charlie Crist supported homosexual adoption of children (and the Florida Bar over objections of members endorsed homosexual adoption of children) this is to be expected.

Adult adoptions are not unusual. rare but not unusual.

If this is an attempt to CONCEAL assets it will just be undone.

The poor lawyer suing him may be reduced to just collecting on the insurance proceeds.

I can't believe that this obvious attempt to shield assets will do anything but pi$$ off the judge in the criminal trial. If this scumbag is convicted, he is likely to get the maximum sentence and spend the rest of his life in prison. Amazing he has been able to stall the criminal trial this long.

It was many many years ago when I was twenty-three,
I was married to a widow, she’s as pretty as can be.
This widow had a grown-up daughter who had hair of red,
my father fell in lover with her, and soon these two were wed.

I’m my own grandpa, I’m my own grandpa.
It sounds silly, I know, but it really is so, oh
I’m my own grandpa.

This made my dad my son-in-law and changed my very life:
My daughter was my mother ‘cause she was my father’s wife.
And then to complicate the matter, though it brought me joy,
I soon became the father of a bouncing baby boy.

This bouncing baby then became a brother-in-law to dad,
and so became my uncle, though it made me very sad,
for if he was my uncle then he also was the brother
of the widow’s grown-up daughter, who, of course, was my step-mother.

I’m my own grandpa, I’m my own grandpa.
It sounds silly, I know, but it really is so, oh
I’m my own grandpa.

Father’s wife then had a son who kept them on the run.
And he became my grandchild, for he was my daughter’s son.
My wife is now my mother’s mother, and it makes me blue,
because although she is my wife, she’s my grandmother, too.

Now if my wife is my grandmother, then I am her grandchild.
And every time I think of it, it nearly drives me wild.
For now I have become the strangest case you ever saw.
Husband of my grandmother, I am my own grandpa.

I’m my own grandpa, I’m my own grandpa.
It sounds silly, I know, but it really is so, oh
I’m my own grandpa.

So this complete piece of crap man, was drunk, killed a man in a wreck, then on top of committing incest with his newly adopted “daughter”, is taking money from his own children’s trust to pay off his debts. I hope he goes to prison.

what about the insurance proceeds?

This is sloppy reporting.

I suspect the insurance company tendered the policy limits already. That is civil and the issue there could be a “wrongful denial” set up by the plaintiff attorney.

Also he could be waiting for the criminal trial because a conviction there is admissible in civil court due to the higher standard. (not the reverse)

again, piss poor reporting.
