It is expected that in March-April at least four U.S. and French aircraft carrier battle groups will be placed in East of Persian Gulf, according to Interfax.

I like France, but that doesn’t negate the problems that have occurred with the Charles De Gaulle.

Hope the props are torqued up tight, the AC and toilets are working. God speed and good sailing.

They probably only have “yellow” dye markers as well for those amphibious operations...

“Queeg Approved” dye markers...;-)

No, just collisions, fires, missiles and planes falling into the water.

Is that a helicopter on the runway of the de gaulle?

I like how the Enterprise already has 2 aircraft ready to go on their runway. Locked and loaded, the American way!

Agreed.

In WW1, the French lost 1.4 million men, out of a population of just 39 and a half million. The US had only about 115,000 military deaths in that conflict, out a population of over 90 million.

In WW2, almost 100,000 Frenchmen perished fighting in the Battle for France, over a time peroid of less then 40 days. Another 100,000 or so French troops died fighting in Free French Forces, making for a total of over 200,000 military dead out of a population of 41 and a half million. The US saw 415,000 military deaths over the course of four years of fighting, out of a population of over 131 million.

In the War in Indochina, the French suffered more then 75,000 deaths out of a population of 40 million. The US lost 58,000 troops in the Vietnam War, out of a population of 194 million.

In the war in French Algeria, more then 25,000 French troops died.

Well, the way I see it, the French might not have a very good track record at winning wars, but there is a big difference between that and cowardice.

Don’t forget the French Foriegn Legion...

Pound for pound the most “tenacious” fighting force in the world...Up and down that chain of command...

(I can feel the SpecOps wannabees, queuing up ready to dispell this analysis...hehehe)

SONOBUOY PING!

Photobucket

Click on pic for past Navair pings. Post or FReepmail me if you wish to be enlisted in or discharged from the Navair Pinglist. The only requirement for inclusion in the Navair Pinglist is an interest in Naval Aviation. This is a medium to low volume pinglist.

Besides, the army is the only real fighting force.

I mean, why not call it the “Jean-Francois Darlan?”

Well, they could have named her after the Comte de Grasse, who defeated the British off Cape Henry or Cape May, and prevented them from raising the siege of Yorktown. But I think that name is pretty consistently taken by other ships in the French OOB.

You know a nation does not have a serious naval tradition when they have to name their best ships after guys who served in the ARMY

You mean like the U.S.S. Eisenhower?

And the Teddy Roosevelt, and the Abe ..... he was a Militia captain in the Blackhawk War .....

Guess we'll have to look up where John Stennis and Carl Vinson served their military time. (Might not have, they were pols through-and-through. If Stennis served in an "army" it was probably Boss Vardaman's machine in Miss'sippi.)

Before we turn away from this neo-bad-tradition of naming aircraft carriers for live people and out-of-office ex-POTUS's-and-pols (but I repeat myself ....for emphasis), why is it the 'Rats never got around to naming a carrier after our boy TJ? Is he now non-PC in his own party? And never mind the Declaration of Independence?

Actually the Royal navy is the home of surrender in the modern era. The Iranians kicked their ass with a motor launch, in sight of their ship.

Would that be the same Iranians who suffered a giant fire and massive explosion in their favorite cruise-missile production facility a few months later? No telling what happened, of course ..... but somehow I like to think the Special Boat Service had something to do with that.

I think we/they ought to singe Dinnerjacket's shorts every other day, personally.

And by American ships such as DD-974. The vitriol on this thread is revolting.

Need somebody there in case a surrender is warranted.

Mock the French all you want, but they've been with us in Afghanistan since late 2001.

This is a formidable force by modern European standards.

If they can get it there.

We and the Japanese are the only countries that have done well with this class.
