The GOP Empire Strikes Back At Gingrich
By Dan Balz January 27
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. The revenge of the Republican establishment is a sight to behold. From one corner to another, those who have tangled with Newt Gingrich, who feel aggrieved toward Newt Gingrich or who fear Newt Gingrich have amassed to stop him. They know how much harder it will be to do so if the former House speaker wins Florida on Tuesday.
The quintessential example of establishment angst came Thursday from Bob Dole, the former Senate majority leader and 1996 Republican presidential nominee. Hours before Thursdays GOP debate, he released a letter circulated by Mitt Romneys campaign attacking Gingrich and pleading with Republican voters not to make him the partys nominee. There is much rich history behind that letter.
Dole is just one voice in a chorus of critics who have spoken out. Gingrichs victory in South Carolina just a week ago sent a shudder through the ranks of elected officials and others who make up the establishment and the conservative elite. Fear of Newt has displaced lack of love for Romney as the dominant emotion among these Republicans.
In recent days, the group has included former House majority leader Tom Delay (R-Tex.) and the caustic Ann Coulter. A trio of House members shadow Gingrichs events. Others who are prominent in the conservative movement have joined ex-colleagues of Gingrich to sound the alarms.

Not wise to piss off an Irishman with an IQ as high as Newt’s....just sayin.
All of them either losers or contributors to the present day mess.
Mitt Romney is George Soros’ partner in JET BLUE. I’m voting for Newt!
See tag line.
They are all RINO’S!!!
Yesterday Tom Delay said “Newt is not a conservative.” This from the guy who left Sugarland, Texas a carpet cleaner and returned a millionaire without holding another job in the private sector. Oh, wait! He did’t return except for his court appearances. But, way to cash in, Tom!
I would rather be associated with Michael Reagan, Thomas Sowell, Art Laffer,Chuck Norris, Bob McFarland, the commander of Black Hawk Down, Mark Levin, Rick Perry and Jim Robinson..also, I do believe Sarah Palin is rooting for Newt. GO NEWT! WOOT! WOOT!
Quite clearly the GOP is irretrievably broken. Seems the moderates among them will sit home if Gingrich gets the nomination, and ditto for the conservatives if it`s Romney.
The Republicans are in desperate need of adult leadership.
As far as I’m concerned, the GOP is a nonentity. It has not represented my standards for many decades. I sometimes have a very difficult time voting for some of their nominees. I’ve voted for the last RINO I will ever vote for.
America has been reduced to a sweet memory for a lack of high standards. I must say it again. High standards come from Almighty God, and were the foundation of this nation. Without God there can be no America!
Me too, but the real question I have is, has Jim Thompson endorsed yet?
Haven’t heard ...hope he is on our side. God knows we need some serious help.
Perhaps Gingrich's classic line labelling Dole "the tax collector for the Welfare State" touched a nerve.
The Empire might be attacking, but Newt has the power of the Force, FREEREPUBLIC.com!!!!!
GODSPEED NEWT GINGRICH.
Actually I feel better about Newt’s chances tonight because Dick Morris assured Fox viewers tonight that Romney would win Florida.
Tom DeLay is an ass who claimed there was no more fat to cut from the budget under W. He wouldn’t even allow fellow Republicans to propose other areas, or offsets for Katrina spending. If cut, DeLay bleeds establishment.
None of what you said about Tom DeLay is true.
None of what you say is true.
