Dole Goes Nuclear (Against Gingrich 3.0)
National Review Onlie ^ | NRO Staff

Posted on 01/26/2012 10:12:01 AM PST by Windy City Conservative

The Romney campaign sends along a statement by Bob Dole pasted below. Relations between Dole — an establishment figure in the party — and Gingrich were well known to be tense during the 1990s. Here it is:

I have not been critical of Newt Gingrich but it is now time to take a stand before it is too late. If Gingrich is the nominee it will have an adverse impact on Republican candidates running for county, state, and federal offices. Hardly anyone who served with Newt in Congress has endorsed him and that fact speaks for itself. He was a one-man-band who rarely took advice. It was his way or the highway.

Gingrich served as Speaker from 1995 to 1999 and had trouble within his own party. Already in 1997 a number of House members wanted to throw him out as Speaker. But he hung on until after the 1998 elections when the writing was on the wall. His mounting ethics problems caused him to resign in early 1999. I know whereof I speak as I helped establish a line of credit of $150,000 to help Newt pay off the fine for his ethics violations. In the end, he paid the fine with money from other sources.

Gingrich had a new idea every minute and most of them were off the wall. He loved picking a fight with Bill Clinton because he knew this would get the attention of the press. This and a myriad of other specifics helped to topple Gingrich in 1998.

In my run for the presidency in 1996 the Democrats greeted me with a number of negative TV ads and in every one of them Newt was in the ad. He was very unpopular and I am not only certain that this did not help me, but that it also cost House seats that year. Newt would show up at the campaign headquarters with an empty ice-bucket in his hand — that was a symbol of some sort for him — and I never did know what he was doing or why he was doing it.

In my opinion if we want to avoid an Obama landslide in November, Republicans should nominate Governor Romney as our standard bearer. He has the requisite experience in the public and private sectors. He would be a president we could have confidence in.

“Bob Dole and John McCain lining up for Romney. Can we get a group photo?”

Throw in Charles Keating and a few million Dollars it would be just like old times.

All we need to do to win is go after the faction called "26 million unemployed people, mostly young, who've been waiting to get on with their careers for the last 3.5 years"

That's the faction that puts us in office.

You don't have to like Mitch Daniels, but his response to the Democrats was a pledge to get the 26 million JOBS ~ real jobs ~ jobs that pay!

Katie, I think it is because Romney will not do anything about welfare, he’s pro homosexual agenda which fits right in up in the north east and the beltway.

Many talking heads are looking to be invited into the white house , you know thank you for lying and helping me now come to the cocktail party we’re throwing.

Lets face it we have elitist types from the north east and DC who look at power, who is who, favors, kickbacks, pork spending and corruption and Newt has a history of going against all of that .
Then there is the older lot of the establishment who remember Newt and think if Newt gets this then we’re out.

Talking heads like Coulter, Hume, FOX, Hannity etc are looking at those days they went to the white house and could bring families.

What I cannot understand that why are some falling for the lies, the attacks, and how liberal Romney is, surely we don’;t have sheep like the left does do we?

I’m sick of it as the establishment won’t let us pick our boy or gal instead they think they know better then they think we will just follow once their guy gets the nomination.

Well I for one will not this time, they lost 2008
we sent them a warning in 2010 and they ignored us and fought us.
Now they fight us the base, us solid conservatives again in 2012 .

Well screw them as far as I am concerned

Being a RINO has nothing to do with being Conservative. It has to do with whether or not you support Republican legislative initiatives, or Republican candidates, or Republican officials (acting on behalf of all that's right and good).

Republicans who stand apart from the crowd, but with the Democrats, or who were Democrats, or ran as Democrats, or who support Mexicans before Americans ~ they are all RINOs.

I stopped going to Drudge months ago. Prefer to research information and avoid the spin as much as possible. Pray that Newt is on tonight because he is going to get attacked big time tonight. The debate may make a crucial difference. GOOOOO NEWT! WOOT! WOOT! The cold hard facts on Romney..never shown on Drudge or Fox..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1fThdWagJ4

“And we can all turn to Bob Dole as an example of what it takes to win a national election.”

No, but we ~can~ turn to him for winning erections!

Nor was Dole a very effective Senator or much of a conservative.

Couldn’t agree more. Florida is a crucial win for Newt. It is winner take all 50 delegates. Have to get the vote out. I will have a better sense of what may happen after tonight’s debate. Have to confess that I am very concerned.

Being a RINO has nothing to do with being Conservative.

It does on FR. Conservatives are what Republicans USED to be. Have you read the party platform lately? I can't think of a single Republican that stands on that platform firmly.

It still means what it meant. What you guys are doing ~ you think ~ is converting it to the exclusive use of just one faction.

Some of you actually think the faction with the privilege of using it as a content deficient cudgel is over there with Ron Paul. Others of you imagine that the TEA Party crowd gets to use it because "we know best". Others want to use it against politicians who criticized Reagan ~ GAD! I am sure Ronaldus Magnus managed to criticize himself occasionally.

There are other, better terms to use to describe your enemies. USE THEM.
