Santorum Giving Up on Florida?
The Corner ^ | 1/25/2012 | Katrina Trinko

Posted on 01/25/2012 1:30:33 PM PST by TBBT

From NBC News:

Failing to show early signs of momentum in the Sunshine State, presidential hopeful Rick Santorum on Wednesday signaled he may be cutting out of Florida before the state’s Jan. 31 primary.

Speaking to reporters here, the former Pennsylvania senator said was unsure if he would be in Florida the night of the primary, committing only to campaigning in the state over the next two days. On Saturday, he’ll head home to Virginia for fundraisers and to prepare his tax records which he plans to soon make public.

Let’s not forget the extremely pro-Romney nature of Katrina Trinko’s reporting for National Review.

The truth is that as people feel less pressured to vote for the leading anti-Romney, the more votes will go to the others. Santorum will surely pick up in the polls as Romney drops to his usual 20%. Ron Paul will stay at his 10%. Perry is gone. That leaves 70% to be divided between Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum: Newt could win 49% and Rick would still beat Mitt.

Santorum can still do well enough to continue, and maybe earn the VP slot.

Rick Santorum has never been popular. Iowa was rigged (because Paul had a chance of winning, and thus losing Iowa the “First in nation” status, the state repubs were actively turning people to Romney or Santorum. Obviously they went to Santorum, because of the “Not-Romney” segment.) Understanding that Santorum never was popular (and never will be) popular is the first step to understanding why has no chance at the nomination. People don’t like him. And I would posit, that he doesn’t like people either.

His vapid petulence coupled with his hatred of freedom keep him in his constant snide and condescending demeanor. He has no “Charisma” as another poster put it, because he has no love of people. Oh, he says he does, but from all his actions, you can easily see he wants to control people, for their own good, of course. Santorum has no enthusiasm, so he has to get himself angry to sound passionate. This further turns people off. Santorum has been at the very bottom of the pack (of those still running) with the exception of Iowa (rigged), and South Carolina, where Paul obviously would do even worse than he has because of demographics.

Of all the candidates left, Santorum has the least loyalty of voters towards him. And with good reason. His state didn’t even support him and booted him out. No one else wants him nor his pseudo-Cathlo-wahabi-ism either. He’s most likely a stalking horse for Romney, to keep the nomination from Newt. Time will tell.

He’s staying in for the same reason much of the country is watching: to see if, when, and how soon Gingrich next implodes.

Santorum is a good man, a dependable and fairly dull man, standing in the middle of a three-ring circus.

Florida is a toss up state that borders the GingrichLand with lots of East Coast Retireees who will vote for Romney. Candidates has left states before. I doubt this campaign will be settled by Floriday and I hope this campaign doesn’t come down to a climate change believer vs. an amnesty supporter by Super Tuesday!

I hope Santorum does not drop out in Florida.

He should have a little more faith in himself and in the prolife people of Florida.

I know he’s short on cash, but he should let the process play itself out.

More choices for more people.

Santorum is NOT a conservative. Conservatives (in the political definition) uphold the Constitution (”conserve it”, the origin of the term). Santorum does not. In fairness only one candidate is a true conservative, but also has whacky, dangerous ideas. Conservativism allows for whacky, and even stupid, ideas, just because you’re “Conservative” doens’t mean you’re right. It means you uphold Constitution boundaries, which by no means prevent someone from making errors. In fact, they specifically allow for them.

There are no “Good” candidates in this race, just some more (or less) acceptable than others.

I think Newt is growning more conservative, but it could be a political ploy. I don’t think so, but I also know that he’s no bastion of conservativism either. However, Obama WILL destroy the country if he stays in office another term. Gingrich would be a better choice than that.

A Santorum VP slot for a Gingrich endorsement

I could live with that.

Can someone explain to me why Santorum is not catching on? His candidacy reminds me of Huckabee, but Huckabee did much better than Rick S. is doing.

Huckabee did a better job of hiding his Big Government (per)version of "conservatism".

Yep. He only ever got any support (and money), because of a false sense of support after a political ploy in Iowa. He’s never been popular, and very few people like him. He’s been done (and polling at the bottom), for the entire race, there was just a dead cat bounce/blip after the funny business in Iowa. He immediately fell back where he’s always otherwise been: last.

Planning to opus soon, are you?

"Can someone explain to me why Santorum is not catching on?"

For the same reason we will never elect another Calvin "Silent Cal" Coolidge, and the reason children's toys are bright and shiny. This culture has become the culture of Americanidolladygagajerseyshoreobamadonaldtrumpetc.

Flash and bombast trump principle and worth. That's not to say a flashy, bombastic person can't have principle or worth, but the former qualities will always trump the latter in the eyes of voters weaned on soundbites.

I would hope Santorum leans Newt's way too in spite of some of his supporters, but this race has had some disapppinting suprises. I thought Palin would show more support to Bachmann and Santorum then she has, so her stock has dropped with me. No matter how flawed the end product of these primaries, though, Obama is my constant reminder, as he was last night, that I will vote for whoever comes out the other end (except for Paul who is left of Obama on some things).

Even if Newt collapsed, Santorum isn’t going to win anything.

Rick Santorum most certainly did not endorse or support Scozzafava. I was implying that before attacking Santorum’s conservative bona fides because of his stupid endorsement of Specter, one should remember that Newt made an even dumber endorsement even more recently (the “Oh, wait” at the end was my subtle proxy for a “sarcasm” tag).

West is one mighty handsome gentleman, isnt he? I don't know much about his politics, but for sure he'd bring a nice aesthetic balance to the ticket because, as some other FReeper (I forget who) noted elsewhere, Gingrich looks like the friggin' Keebler Elf! [^)

GODSPEED NEWT GINGRICH.

I've watched Santorum in town halls and he connects with people very well. In national polls he has lower negatives then most of the other candidates in the race. He especially connects with women. He's been very prominent in the pro-family movement for some time. He came out to Iowa and rode a bus to help remove the judges who forced homosexual marriage on the state. He's worked the causes when most never bothered. He won in Pennsylvania that is a heavily democratic swing state, so how you can say he doesn't connect I don't get. Usually being a social conservative kills you in a dem state, but he must have connected because he got elected despite it. You obviously don't care for people of faith, so maybe Paul's your choice. Actually, I'd think equating Catholicism with Wahabism is more in line with an Obama supporter, and I'm not a Catholic.
