MIAMI Former House speaker Newt Gingrich on Wednesday mocked as an Obama-level fantasy Mitt Romneys plan to deal with illegal immigration by encouraging self-deportation.
Gingrich made the comment as he began a day of outreach to Floridas Hispanic voters with an extensive interview on Spanish-language television and a speech at Florida International University in which he called for a more a forceful U.S. role in ending communist rule in Cuba, as well as an overhaul of U.S. economic policies toward all of Latin America.
In an interview with the Univision network, Gingrich said it was unrealistic for millions of illegal immigrants in the United States to voluntarily leave the country, as Romney, his chief rival for the Republican presidential nomination, suggested in a debate Monday ahead of Floridas Jan. 31 primary. Gingrich, who upset the GOP race by decisively winning Saturdays South Carolina primary, also used a question about the immigration issue to get in a few digs at the former Massachusetts governor over his wealth and tax returns.
You have to live in a world of Swiss bank accounts and Cayman Island accounts and automatic $20 million income for no work to have some fantasy this far from reality, Gingrich told Univision interviewer Jorge Ramos. For Romney to believe that somebodys grandmother is going to be so cut off that she is going to self-deport, I mean this is an Obama-level fantasy.

Nana Mocks Romney’s “Self-Deportation” Plan For Illegal Immigrants

Ping.

How on earth is this type of comment coming from a so called strong conservative.
Newt’s right though. It’s fantastical to expect that millions are simply going to voluntarily self-deport once the border is sealed and the laws are enforced. Yes, some will leave. But many will remain.
I don’t want a private equity investment manager as my president. Does that make me not conservative?
Pandering for the illegal alien loving vote in the Florida primary might work, but how does Newt expect to outbid ObaMao in the general election?
And those that do can stay "in the shadows," as far as I am concerned. They don't deserve bennies from us.
We sure have. So, why does Newt mock the concept? Does it bother him, or does he think it will bother potential Florida voters? D'uh. They can't be conservatives, right?
Newt’s plans/rhetoric aside (cuz’I’m not really up on HIS particular stance), it really IS the key and states like Alabama have proven it so.
If we get tough and start JAILING people who rent, support and employ illegals, it will work.
Make this country HOSTILE to the notion of supporting those who come here illegally and take the tit from them.
In addition, I would love to see those who are responsible for the unlawful creation of “sanctuary citizens” to be perp-marched as well.
I agree they shouldn’t receive benefitsnobody is saying they should receive anything.
But you’re still going to have millions who remain here, supported off the books by their own people. There needs to be a plan for dealing with them.
Some birds will still stay in your yard if you take the bird feeder down, but they will tend to be the more industrious type who can get along fine without taxpayer handouts. IOW, not your typical La Raza voters.
Still at it I see. We both agree that attrition through enforcement works. And there is no need to legalize the status of those that remain. We just make our country as inhospitable to lawbreakers as we possibly can including shutting off the job magnet, checking the immigration of those on lawful stops, cutting off all benefits etc. No amnesty period.
Automatic 20 million for no work?
So Gingrich thinks someone dependent on money earned through investments is lazy and does not work.
Self-deportation is underway as we speak, thanks to the leadership of Arizona with Alabama, Georgia and other states following with strong measures.
I guess Gingrich disapproves of the self-deportation policies of his home state, Georgia. The guy is a walking bundle of contradictions whose reach in to leftist rhetoric to win conservative votes is a wonder to see.
The point of Newt’s comment was that Romney is out of touch with the realities most people face. That is undeniably true. It wasn’t class warfare rhetoric.
Like I said, I don’t want a private equity investment manager as my president. We’re not running for best CEO here.
The plan is called attrition thru enforcement. We should enforce our existing immigration laws. It is illegal for an employer to hire an illegal alien and it is illegal for an illegal alien to work. And we have laws against ID theft, driving without a license, tax evasion, etc. I really don't see the urgency of having to deal with those already here beyond normal law enforcement. No mass roundups and mass deportations. And you secure the borders and set up a system to track and deport visa overstays.

There was a time when Romney tried to out-gay and out-abortion Kennedy. Kennedy, a left winger, was amazed at the attempt from someone most saw as more conservative than him. Now Romney knows how Kennedy felt.
I live in Texas, most will leave when their reason for being here drys up. As for those that choose to remain? Well we can talk about that AFTER enforcement is put in place.
