DANA POINT, Calif. (KABC) -- A Dana Point resident woke to the sounds of an intruder Monday night, then fatally shot the suspect.
The resident has not been charged in the shooting, though the case is still under investigation.
The incident happened at a house on the 34000 block of Capistrano By the Sea in Dana Point.
At least two bullets shattered a window at the house. Authorities say at least one bullet hit the male intruder who allegedly confronted the victim around 11 p.m. Monday.
"The homeowner heard some noises inside his home, checked around initially, did not see anything. Went back into his bedroom, heard some more noises," said Jim Amormino, spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Department.
Investigators say the resident then armed himself with a handgun and opened his bedroom door, where the suspected burglar confronted him.
"I'm not sure how many shots were fired, but more than one shot was fired by the homeowner," said Amormino.
Authorities say the suspect managed to climb out an open window that he originally came through, then died in the back yard.

i love happy endings.
Was there blood inside?
Was the kill shot outside and the inside shots fired later to look lime misses?
Prosecutors and CSI types will want to know
Well, at least he was nice enough to clean up after himself.
Takin’ out the trash!
Amormion is like dealing with Droopy the Dog...
Amormino isn't smart enough to understand, if someone has entered your home uninvited, your life is likely in grave danger. Only a foolish moron would wait for an intruder to do harm before killing them.
I'm with you. I love the happy endings myself.
Dana Point is one of THE most upscale coastal communities in California. It is on the Gold Coast between San Clemente and Laguna Beach. No neighborhood is completely safe.
Grave danger? Is there another kind? Thanks Col. Jessup!
We rented a house on Capistrano Beach last year. it was just heavenly. Dana Point is one of my favorites places in CA. You’re not immune from crime no matter where you are.
Well, not exactly. Its mostly a nice place and has some 'upscale' parts, but it also has a lot of 'troublesome' neighborhoods that more than balance it out.
