(CREW) Watchdog requests documents from Gingrich ethics probe

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) filed requests on Wednesday seeking access to documents uncovered in an ethics investigation into former House Speaker Newt Gingrich that took place in the 1990s.

The group filed Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests with the Internal Revenue Service and the Department of Justice inquiring after any documents provided between 1996 and 1997 by the House Ethics Committee relating to the investigation.

The group is looking for any additional documents that might not have been released publicly as part of the committee's report.

The possibility of additional documents has been the subject of much speculation, fueled by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who served at that time on the Ethics Committee that investigated Gingrich on allegations of tax cheating and campaign finance violations.

Although Pelosi’s office denies that she has any additional information from the investigation, she has made several claims in interviews that prompted speculation that more information had been revealed behind the scenes.

Mitt Romney, Gingrich’s competition in the Republican presidential race, has encouraged the speculation and continues to press for full disclosure of the investigation.

Totally predictable that this is all going to get dredged up again. Unfortunately, it will have some effect.

That and I really did not want to be still talking about Monica Lewinsky in 2012.

But, here we go.

Remember the Palin emails?

The media never learns, does it?

The funny thing about this is if they had ANYTHING embarrassing in ANY documents don't you think they would have been outed a long, long time ago? Like around BJ’s impeachment?

This is all a freekin joke...

For sure, if Nan had more goods on Newt during the investigation, he’d have done the perp walk long ago.

This action clearly contains Obozo’s fingerprints.

This was his method of operation from his first day seeking office.

Now lets return the favor. He has more damaging information to hide than any human who ever held public office in U.S. History.

Aren't internal documents from the Ethics Committee protected?

Newt was exonerated on all charges. The idiot partisans on the ethics committee turned their complaints over to the IRS and the FBI and they eventually cleared Gingrich of all charges.

Someone just posted a link to me, from the WA Examiner that lays out the whole complaint and the results. Gingrich did nothing wrong, the whole thing was trumped up by Democrat partisans who hated Gingrich for taking away their power.

Exactly. If there was any “there” there it would have been made public a long time ago. They have nothing, and it says something about Romney’s judgement that he;s sided with them.

When is CREW going to ask for Obama college records?

When is CREW going to ask Congress to carry on with the Maxine Waters investigation.

Asking for Newts records while ignoring Obama and Waters is just their way of expressing their bias.

Just imagine the screaming, wailing, and state run headlines if the GOP had asked for ethics documents on Maxine Waters be released. Oh that's right her case just disappeared from the news cycle.

The House Ethics Committee has formally extended the special counsel investigation into conflict-of-interest allegations against Rep. Maxine Waters and whether the panel itself overzealously pursued the case against the California Democrat.

He was cleared just like Sarah was but again the establishment and the left work with each other to take a non establishment person out.

They did the same to Sarah and now they bring this crap up again to take Newt out and you can bet the next debate the moderator will focus on this to help Romney.
Once they have Romney as their guy they will turn on him just like they did to McCain but of course the establishment never understand anything and think they have to be nice to the bias liberal MSM

We gave them the message in 2010 and still they ignore us.
How pathetic

This is starting to look more and more like the entrenched establishment, comprised of both Republicans and Democrats as much as an egg includes both the white and the yoke.

And both parts have been attacking the top “not-Mitt” from day one.

IOW, the two parties establishment is showing it’s hand. And thanks to the internet a lot of us are seeing it.

“Isn’t this a SOROS group?”

Yep. They’re a “non-partisan” group funded by a massive number of Democrats that just so happens to launch ethics complaints against Republicans 90% of the time...:

I'm aware of Gingrich's history. I was wondering what the ominous "for now" meant.
