On his income taxes released today, we see that Romney gave $4 Million tithe donations to Mormon Church. Do Mormons help poor Americans with these donations? Do the Mormons have something similar to Catholic Charities, which helps thousands of Americans (both Catholic and non-Catholics) with basic life needs, medical help, childcare help, education help, etc. The main question is do Mormons use the $4 Million from Romney to ONLY advance the Mormon religion without helping the American poor. Does Romney even know or care what the Mormon Church does with his $4 Million donation? I think that is a fair question.
Most educated guesses, and they are only that, report that the Mormon Church gives only a small portion of their wealth toward support of needy individuals ... something on the order of one to two percent ... and that is restricted almost exclusively to church members. A much more generous amount is spent on recruiting new members.
The mormon church is a corporation and the top leaders are businessmen..not theologians.
Also, rather than take the risk of the finances of the church becoming known, in their PR campaigns they haven't taken the obvious step of publicizing actual dollar amounts that could be seen as actual charitable giving by the corporation.
Most of the publicized disaster aid and giving comes from members, over and above their tithing which says much for the members and little for the Corporation.
While the Church employs an independent auditing department which provides an annual report to the Church[1], it has not published full financial reports since 1959.
The Council was established by church founder Joseph Smith, Jr. on 8 July 1838.[2] As of April 2009, the members of the Council are:
I agree, I like that model better, but there are certainly plenty of Jewish relief programs for Jews, etc.. I am personally no fan of the too me sometimes apparently coercive approach in Mormonism, but I don’t take the form of their relief programs as something to go against Romney with.
Back off. I was defending Mormonism for having a strong relief program for their members. I pointed out that I was no authority on the religion and I said nothing about what programs they had for nonmembers.
You don’t do Mormonism any favors by coming off as a jerk trying to defend it.
Thanks, but I’m not menaced by Mormonism.
“Meanwhile, it asks members in third world nations in poverty to sacrifice their gold fillings to build ugly temples.”

What a load of crap. Everyone knows that Mormons always eat the babies first and then pry the gold from their parents mouths. /s
Please provide proof of your idiotic statement.
“He tithes to his church, majority of Mormons are good and faithful people who live their religious faith well.
I let God do the judging. I “
From your past posts, I see you are Catholic, correct? I just do not understand how a Catholic, or any Christian, can support a liberal like Mitt Romney who panders to homosexuals, and who has innocent blood on his hands from his $50 taxpayer-funded abortions.
Actually, it ISN’T a fair question. First, that money isn’t public money. If that’s what we were talking about, your question would at least have merit, and you could debate it.
However, it’s their money, and it’s freely given. Just because I have a dollar in my pocket, is it your assertion that the poor MUST have it, or part of it?
The Mormons are easy people to defend. They take care of themselves, and they take care of each other. Were that the rest of us had the same notions of community, manners, judicious charity, and sobriety in speech, thought, and commerce, then entitlements probably wouldn’t be an issue for the US.
No, I’m not Mormon, but the ones I know and do business with are, individually and as a group, fine, honest, forthright people.
Sounds to me like you want to go back to the bad old days of government-enforced tithing like they had in Germany until the 90’s, and in England.
Go online, look up Mormon Disaster Relief, Mormon disaster warehouses, Mormon help for Haiti, Indonesia, Japan, joplin, etc; The Church makes and delivers 20,000 tons of Atmit, an Ethiopian cereal to prevent starvation for the very old and very young. This is done every year for free. I am an 85 year old Mormon convert of 57 years. I have seen nothing but good come from this great organization. We have over 5000 church and Temple buildings around the world. ALL PAID FOR! Isn’t that terrible??
Sorry, didn’t fully copy the part of your post I was responding to. Should be:
“He tithes to his church, majority of Mormons are good and faithful people who live their religious faith well.
I let God do the judging. I will support and vote for him.
I’ll vote for him in the primary.”
Here you go, answer awaits.

Yeah, I getcha. Just wanted to remind you of places like moveon and DUmmies which exist almost exclusively to promote their moral self righteousness.. i.e. moral relativism.
"From the church's own web site is a somewhat disturbing story of how members of the church in Argentina felt so compelled to provide funds for the temple that they actually gave their gold fillings from their teeth to the church."[Faust] emphasized the need to sacrifice for temple building and shared how members in Argentina found ways to donate during the construction of the São Paulo Brazil Temple. They gave the gold from their dental work to help pay for the temple. He said that he had purchased some of the gold fillings for more than the market price to share with congregations the nature of the sacrifice made by these members (Church News, 9 May 1998)."

"Although some may tout this story as one of 'faith', to us it is an example of pushing people to the limit of unnecessary sacrifice. The church did not need the gold fillings from these people to pay for the temple. The interest off the $100 billion of church assets could have easily covered this. Are there any LDS members that actually wanted these poor people to feel that they had to rip the fillings out of their mouths and give them to the church? "
I would suggest you learn to use Google, instead of lashing out at those who know how to do so. We don't mind doing your research occasionally, but it gets tiresome over the years.
Thanks.
But he wants to be president, it’s a fair game question.
Until a few weeks ago, I would have thought that comment to be beneath you.
Rick Santorum: Newt Gingrich Is ‘Inconsistent’ On Abortion, Stem Cell Research.
Gingrich has also had his moments.
Bashing thread? ... And you insult we members and the owner by implying we and he favor such a thing, even though this is not a bashing thread? N00b, you may have wandered into the wrong website for your inclinations! Did you have a previous screen name here?
I did not say that aid wasn’t sent.
Of course they have sent aid, and they advertise about on their news sites, they send out PR bulletins, they self promote.
I will say for the amount of money that SLC lds has, they do not proportionately give nearly as much as other groups.
From lds.org: The Mormon Church has donated more than $1 billion in cash and material assistance to 167 different countries in need of humanitarian aid since it started keeping track in 1985.
That is 27 years one billion dollars OR $37 million a year.
There is aid IT IS NOT as much as they promote themselves to have given.
The 15% is the figure for the temple recommendation. There is a list of stuff you must swear to in order to get the TR, tithing is only one of the items.
The temple has several areas, it is the inner circle the is prohibited unless you have a TR.
Billing for the buildings, makes you wonder what they do with the tithes.
