  • The Kentucky Republican sets off an alarm when he went through a scanner
  • A TSA official says Paul was "not detained" but left willingly

(CNN) -- Authorities blocked U.S. Sen. Rand Paul at the Nashville airport Monday after the Kentucky Republican refused a pat-down at a security checkpoint, his spokeswoman said.

Paul went through a scanner at the airport and set off an alarm, said his spokeswoman, Moira Bagley. He wanted to go through the body scan again instead of getting a pat-down, but officers of the Transportation Security Administration refused, Bagley said.

I hope Rand Paul plays this one right...

It should not be “The TSA dared to detain me! Don’t they know I am a member of the United States Senate... etc”

It should be “The TSA detained me, as they would have detained any one of you, if you had the luxury of refusing to comply with their ridiculous and insulting rules. I do this for you, as a public servant, to point out the unsupportable nature of the TSA policy”.

the Obamanation will say that attending the March for Life is not the same as returning to take an important vote...like passing something to see what’s in it.

Not just “March for Life”

The Senate is back in session today at 2 p.m., with votes scheduled at 4:30 p.m. It is not clear if Paul will make it to Washington by 4:30 p.m. on his new flight.

Once you are in the secure zone you cannot leave without TSA permission. To leave without clearance is a crime.

To  detain a U.S. Senator travelling to or from work is in violation of the Constitution. Which is the bigger crime?

Interesting that they admit openly of violating the Constitution:

Article 1 Section 6 of the U.S. Constitution:

"The Senators and Representatives shall receive a Compensation for their Services, to be ascertained by Law, and paid out of the Treasury of the United States. They shall in all Cases, except Treason, Felony and Breach of the Peace, be privileged from Arrest during their Attendance at the Session of their respective Houses, and in going to and returning from the same; and for any Speech or Debate in either House, they shall not be questioned in any other Place>."

I guess in TSA newspeak Rand Paul is guilty of "Treason, Felony or Breach of the Peace".

A basic question is why was 9-11 used as an excuse to install ever encroaching surveillance and abrogations of freedom in place of securing our borders and halting the flood of entrants, illegal and legal, from countries that hate us?

Question? Aren’t uncooperative fliers placed on a “no fly” list?

Also, it is hard for me to believe this was anything other than planned by TSA. Progressive posters on CNN are loving this.

I'm not disagreeing with you. I'm pointing out the system the TSA has created doesn't allow you to just leave. Once you enter they must clear you or you will be arrested. I fly A LOT and detest the bastards in the TSA. They are basically useless except for teaching us to give up freedom.

Remember, the TSA still has not caught a single terrorist.

Damn media. ABC news at the top of the hour reported that he was detained because he refused screening by the TSA. Of course, that wasn’t the whole story but you wouldn’t know it by their reporting.

(just for grins, they are also giving big soundbite play to Mitt’s new ad saying how Newt was convicted of ethics violations.)

Worth asking, and reposting, often. Law enforcement officials are human, and they find it easier to control law-abiding citizens than criminals. That should be law enforcement's problem, not ours.

Yeah, warrantless patdowns are the culmination of demeaning behavior.
Now consider those of us who, due to medical implants (pacemakers in particular) _cannot_ consent to the assorted electromagical scanners.

I notice that CNN has changed their story to begin to defend the Administration. All FReepers’ objections are wrong, and must be thrown into the memory hole at once!

Interesting-— Others are saying this was a Ru Paul political stunt.

Either way, I will be interested in how Rand Paul follows up and how Ru Paul brings it up in the debate, and how the other candidates respond with their positions.

The more public-debate push-back on power-hungry DHS and TSA, the better for Americans, IMO.

I thought congress critters had their own special line to go through? After all they can’t be held up by us little people.

DHS issues special ID for politicians, diplomats, and cops for varying privileges when going through airports or checkpoints. They still may have to be scanned, but as soon as they flash their ID, no patdowns. Obviously TSA had some "special" instructions, or Paul should have shown his ID.

As usual, something smells, and it's probably TSA.

I wonder if that means he can’t fly. He might get charged also.

Dangerous thing to do as a PR stunt. Which it probably was.

I have to wear a prosthetic myself, and since I often fly on business, I get tired of being dinged about it every time and then getting unceremoniously groped by these thugs.

Hopefully, this incident will be the beginning of the end of TSA.

We are absolutely in agreement here.

I still can't believe how much people are willing to submit to just to get on an airplane.

‘I still can’t believe how much people are willing to submit to just to get on an airplane. ‘

And when TSA is doing it with bus and train travel, what will you do?

And when they set up checkpoints on highways, what will you do?

Then, I’ll say, I can’t believe what you are willing to do just to go eat at a restaurant 5 miles down the highway.
