PSU editor quits after erroneous Paterno report

PHILADELPHIA - The managing editor of a student-run news organization that covers Penn State resigned Saturday after the publication's Twitter account sent messages saying former coach Joe Paterno had died, according to a letter on the publication's website.

Paterno's sons refuted accounts of their 85-year-old father's death in Twitter messages posted after those by Onward State.

"I appreciate the support & prayers. Joe is continuing to fight," Jay Paterno tweeted.

Paterno has lung cancer and has been in a hospital since Jan. 13. His doctors say recent complications have made his condition "serious."

Onward State recanted its posts but not before the erroneous information was reported and amplified by many media organizations across the country and retweeted countless times. The Associated Press did not publish the report.

Good. I would far prefer to see Paterno face court proceedings before he passes on.

That will be much better for the children who were raped by Sandusky and any cohorts that might be identified as this plays out.

Court proceedings? Why? I really don't understand the hatred of Paterno.

He didn't to the thing.
He didn't witness the thing.
He did report the thing.
It was outside of his jurisdiction to resolve the thing.

Yes: He could have, and should have done more.

But I hear very little hatred of Sandusky, or McGreevey, or anyone else in the administration. Just about all the hatred is directed at Paterno. Quite frankly, I see this as a variety of Leftist thinking -- "I see a successful football coach! Let's get him! Bring him down! We hate successful people!"

Editors of SeeBS Sports, PennLive, Huffington Post, Newark Star Ledger and others should resign too! My PSU alum wife got facebooked last night by PennLive that Paterno was dead. Upset her greatly. I was skeptical and tracked down where the report came from: It was fricking tweet from these “Onward” clowns! That’s what SeeBS went with! A fricking tweet!

We really do not have a working press in this country anymore. All the journalism grads come out of a school as democrat operatives worrying that accepting a Diet Coke from an interviewee might be unethical. Absolutely no journalism professionalism!!!!

I really don't understand the hatred of Paterno.

I don't either, but I think you're right. Envy and the satisfaction some get from watching the mighty fall. He reported it promptly and assumed it had been dealth with.

It’s not the crime, it’s the coverup.

Paterno continued to line his pockets knowing full well of the institutional coverup - profits and recruiting over humanity.

Paterno shares the blame for destroying children’s lives.

No it was not outside his jurisdiction

Paterno was a member of the governing board af a charity helping at risk kids. Just for a moment (if the mental capacity for this exists somewhere within your skull) forget that Paterno is a coach at Pedo State. Multiple incidences from multiple sources come to light (The assistant coach, the janitors, etc...) that the founder of the charity is taking these kids out and fu#*ing them. That is the situation.

As one of the People in charge of The Second Mile Paterno should have either seen to it that law enforcement investigated thoroughly, or failing that, resigned from the board of directors. He did neither.

Paterno’s defenders seem to be all about college football. There are people who don't give a crap about football, and never think of college after they leave.

It’s not the crime, it’s the coverup.

Paterno reported it.

You wanted him to report it more? You wanted him to pursue it vigorously? Fine. I see that point: it's valid.

But I don't see a "cover up".

Devon Edwards said in the letter that he takes responsibility for the misinformation. He said the publication retracted its tweets after "the mountain of evidence stacked opposite that report became too much to ignore." He also apologized to the Paterno family and the Penn State community.

At least this guy had the decency to step up and take responsibility, admit his mistake, and resigned. How many members of the mainstream media would have done the same?

To be fair though, apparently he was “dead”, and they were just maintaining his body on a respirator until the rest of the family could get to the hospital to say their goodbyes.

Still, you don’t call them dead until they are actually dead.

The guy apparently has died now. The report was premature I guess.

I wish he had his day in court over the disgusting cover up.

Paterno was a member of the governing board af a charity helping at risk kids.

No he wasn't. He was an honorary member -- no decision making power-- just as were Lou Holtz, Andy Reid and numerous other celebrities.

You are clueless about what is going on.
