America hates Newt Gingrich
Wash Examiner ^ | 1-20-12 | Conn Carroll

Unlike Mitt Romney, who occasionally beats President Obama in general election poll match ups, Newt Gingrich trails far behind President Obama in every survey. But just how bad are Gingrich's unfavorable among the general public compared to Obama and Romney?

Not every poll releases their full results, so here are the most recent favorability results I could find for Obama, Romney, and Newt.

Fox News, 1/12-1/14: Obama, fav/unfav, 51%/46%, +5 Romney, fav/unfav, 45%/38%, +7 Gingrich, fav/unfav, 27%/56%, -29

CBS/NYT, 1/12-1/17: Obama, fav/unfav, 38%/45%, -7 Romney, fav/unfav, 21%/35%, -14 Gingrich, fav/unfav, 17%/49%, -32

PPP, 1/13-1/17: Obama, app/dis, 47%/50%, -3 Romney, fav/unfav, 35%/53%, -18 Gingrich, fav/unfav, 26%/60%, -34

America does not love Romney, but boy do they hate Newt.

True. Added to that, the vast majority of eligible voters haven’t watched a single GOP debate. A lot of them wouldn’t even be able to identify a picture of Gingrich. Romney’s been running for president for nearly 7 years, and he benefits from higher name recognition.

When Newt gets the nom, the TEA party nation will act as they did in November 2010.

Did you somehow miss the resolve and organization of the 2010 RAT shellacking?

The only candidate remaining with the lowest unfavorability ratings is Rick Santorum.

Santorum is a decent enough guy. His conservatism is certainly no more bona fide the Newt's, since they're both "big government conservatives" in their hearts.

Santorum's lower unfavorability rating is most likely directly correlated to his lower recognizability factor. I'm reminded of Peter Lorre asking in Casablanca, "You hate me, don't you, Rick?" To which Rick replied, "If I ever gave it any thought, I probably would."

Should Santorum win in SC and go on to seriously challenge for the nomination, I have no doubt the media would be up to the challenge of making him every bit as unlikeable as Newt.

It's what they do.

This more than anything else illustrates how Republicans are committing political suicide by nominating Newt Gingrich. These numbers show that roughly half of the voters will not vote for Newt. Let’s find a candidate who has much lower unfavorability numbers before it’s too late.

Why even have an election process? Let's just do a favorability poll! When Newt has the opportunity to articulately contrast traditional founding values against the Marxist/Socialist currently in the WH you will be surprised how those numbers will change.

Not much difference between Willard and Leroy, except that Willard has actually won statewide office. Willard also didn’t pay a record ethics fine either. Come to think of it, Willard isn’t for amnesty either. Rest assured, I won’t be voting for either one of them. I’ll be voting for a conservative candidate instead. I remember a time where people here on FreeRepublic used to support conservatives. Today, they simply want to reminisce about how great things were during the Clinton years.

Well enlighten us lesser mortals pal, what conservative are you going to vote for? Help us out here.

Job One for RIGHT NOW is for Newt to work his way into
domination in the primaries, and get the nomination.
Part of this process will involve winning a personal popularity contest against Romney from the wide Republican electorate. It’s no question that Newt has , or will have the overwhelming majority of the Tea Party vote.Romney has virtually NONE of it, Santorum a little, and I don’t think Paul has enough of it to matter.
There could be TWO Newts developing over the next several months: the first one is the Newt, in full swing now, who must beat Romney, while at the same time creating an impression that he is the one with the skills and passion to defeat Obama, and the SECOND NEWT will and can only come into play once he GETS the nomination: THAT Newt will be in full
attack mode as he carefully lays out how and why Obama must be beat.So Newt has his work cut out for him working in effect on two fronts at the same time, deftly juggling two objectives and not dropping either of them for very long.
He must ALSO be the one to continue keeping the MSM in line, going forward, and we know from experience he’s already been good at that. He’s shrewd enough to know also, that even though he’s getting the brunt of it, the MSM has been unfair to the other candidates, attacking them on behalf of the Obama Administration. It’s a curious dynamic that’s developed here.
Newt’s the only one I trust.

The polls are skewed so people believe romney can beat obama, when in fact they want to run against romney and are scared of Gingrich.

Every single Republican I’ve heard wants to “repeal and replace” Obamacare. No one is talking about a strict repeal and back to the status quo. Almost everyone I’ve heard has said they want to, for example, stop people with pre-existing conditions from being dropped from health insurance plans, like Obamacare does. 300 pages is 10% of the bill, and includes stuff like that which Republicans would have supported if the rest of the bill wasn’t there. Until you go over specifically what those 300 pages are, you’re just showing yourself to be close-minded by demonizing everything without looking at it first.

Neither of them are winning anything.

The media launched a smear campaign on Newt when he was Speaker, the kind of campaign that started with Bork. People didn’t get savvy to how badly the media spun things towards liberals until the conservative media got started with the internet, talk radio, FOX News in the late ‘90s and to today. It’s a very different environment. Most likely the average person has a negative meme implanted in their heads from that era, like they would for Ken Starr, Linda Tripp, even Rush Limbaugh. But just like Rush, if Newt got the chance to make his case on the national stage he would be able to bring people over to his side and change their minds about who he is and what his positions are. Obviously you know how most people who don’t like Rush will readily admit they never listened to his show.

My what a wonderfully written treatise on the foibles of the peoples choice as opposed to the chosen one(s).
Excellent article Conn Carroll, you've outdone yourself.
Now crawl back into your slim pit and fester a while longer.
It'll all be over soon enough.

The very fact that this was written by a Senior Editorial Writer is nothing short of amazing.
A 117 word article, 43 of which are not his, to tell us we hate Newt.
BTW, Do 74 words justify being called an article?
I'm sure he sat up nights dreaming up the title.
What a complete fool.
Conn should just return to his favorite practice, kissing Obammie's a$$.

I find solace in each and every article I read attempting to belittle the speaker.
It will get very interesting after August when all the media is going berserk trying to stop Newt.
These Alinsky tactics are getting so boring…

Oh no, I certainly didn’t miss it and there is no doubt the Tea Party will get behind Newt or whoever wins the nomination. But there’s no disputing that national elections are won by whoever wins the moderate and independent vote. The left and the right will vote for whoever they nominate.

But who scores lowest in the independents and moderates of this group - Gingrich. Not that we need Romney or some other moderate republican, a good conservative could easily win the independents, as most people are sick of this unqualified poser, the bad economy, and all the stench coming out of this administration.

The media doesn’t have all the baggage and low favorability numbers on Bachman, Perry, Santorum like they have on Gingrich. The public persona the media has created for Gingrich is very negative and already set in the minds of most people, not the tea party supporters. but the independents who will as always decide the outcome.

Sure he can win, but with Ginrich as the nominee it’s now a tight race.

Romney was fighting us pretty hard during the Clinton years, he was anti-Reagan, anti-Contract with America, and just flat out anti-conservatives like Jesse Helmses, as he labeled them.

Romney was fund raising for democrats and Planned Parenthood, and condemning Ted Kennedy for being weak on “gay rights”.
