RIP January 25, 1938 - January 20, 2012

Etta James (born Jamesetta Hawkins; January 25, 1938 – January 20, 2012) was an American singer whose style spanned a variety of music genres including blues, rhythm and blues, rock and roll, soul, gospel and jazz. Starting her career in the mid 1950s, she gained fame with hits such as "Dance With Me, Henry", "At Last", "Tell Mama", and "I'd Rather Go Blind" for which she claimed she wrote the lyrics. She faced a number of personal problems including drug addiction before making a musical resurgence in the late 1980s with the album, The Seven Year Itch.

She is regarded as having bridged the gap between rhythm and blues and rock and roll, and is the winner of six Grammys and 17 Blues Music Awards. She was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, the Blues Hall of Fame in 2001, and the Grammy Hall of Fame in both 1999 and 2008. Rolling Stone ranked James number 22 on their list of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time and number 62 on the list of the 100 Greatest Artists.

Here is Hal David’s story of how they got to work with Dionne Warwick.

She was a background singer on a lot of the recording dates, and she came to Burt wanting to do some demo records for him. He invited her up to Famous Music, and she sang for both of us. We were both very impressed, and we went in and did a couple of demo songs with her ... ”Make it Easy on Yourself” was submitted to Jerry Butler ... Dionne was much perturbed because she thought that was her song. I think that’s what prompted us to go and take Dionne to Florence Greenberg at Scepter Records and see if we could get her a contract, which we were able to do right away.

Here is Dionne Warwick’s version.

It came about because of a fight I had with Hal and Burt – not really a fight but a little argument. I felt Hal and Burt had given my songs away, and they felt they hadn’t and that maybe I was being a bit unreasonable. Well, one word led to another, and finally I said, “Don’t make me over, man!” and I walked out. About a week later I walked back in. The mad was gone, and they had written the song.

Note how Hal David and Burt Bacharach work between the bar lines with the lyrics in the steady 6/8 pulse. This was just a hint of what Bacharach was to do with time signatures in the future.

I saw Chuck Jackson perform in Hollywood in the 1990's. For "Any Day Now," they didn't use an organ or strings, but it was still a worthwhile performance.
