That one did poorly enough on the charts to prompt me to skip it, but thanks for bringing it up. It’s of historical interest.

In 1962, the Flo Greenberg connection brought a Burt Bacharach and Bob Hilliard tune to Chuck Jackson. This is an early masterpiece. Catch the way the organ and strings work together and the way the organ hook works at the beginning and the end.

Jerry Butler had come out of Chicago and its unique sound, and he had been lead vocalist of the Impressions before Curtis Mayfield. In Chicago, Butler was known as “the Ice Man” because he was so cool. In 1962, Dionne Warwick recorded a demo of this song. Jerry Butler heard the demo and rushed to New York to record his voice over the existing instrumental bed. Dionne was furious.

[The Blob] did poorly enough on the charts to prompt me to skip it, but thanks for bringing it up. It’s of historical interest.

The Zanies, who I believe were from Los Angeles, also recorded "The Blob" for Dore records in 1958. I like their version somewhat better, but I don't think it charted.

Great that you are doing this tribute to Etta James, Drumbo. I somehow knew you would. :)

Good evening, Connie...*HUGS*...was up at 6a for a telephone conference that was canceled after it was too late to go back to bed. Work was productive, but chaotic.

Left early to take my Dad to get his hearing aids fixed, BUT the tech said his ear with the squealing noises was blocked with wax. Just a couple months ago, it was fine. Soooo...now I have to call his doc and get that fixed and then back to the hearing tech.

Then sometime this week I've tweaked my back and from something right smack in the middle, when I move certain ways, sends pain radiating everywhere. Got an appt with the chiropractor tomorrow. I got this thingy that goes in my chair, with little rollers going up and down my spine and massage, with heat. I fell asleep. LOL!

Hope your day went well and you can relax some this weekend.

Burt Bacharach and Hal David were also behind Dionne Warwick's first and best hit recording, Don't Make Me Over, which scored around the time USC and Wisconsin were battling for the national championship in the 1963 Rose Bowl. If you tuned in to KRLA, KFWB or KGFJ in late '62 or early '63, you would have probably heard a shorter version than the one presented here.

“Don’t Make Me Over” is coming up within the hour with the story of how it got written and recorded.

This is the original recording of this Hal David and Burt Bacharach tune. Tommy Hunt had been lead vocalist with the Flamingos and had gone out on his own. It failed in 1962 but became a regional hit in the summer of 1964. It’s beautifully sung and produced, and your screen should go all blurry when Tommy hits the high E-flat at the end.

Gene Pitney went to the Hal David and Burt Bacharach well once again and got himself a huge hit. Catch that Ray Conniff-style whistling.
