Tunes For The Troops

RIP January 25, 1938 - January 20, 2012

Etta James (born Jamesetta Hawkins; January 25, 1938 – January 20, 2012) was an American singer whose style spanned a variety of music genres including blues, rhythm and blues, rock and roll, soul, gospel and jazz. Starting her career in the mid 1950s, she gained fame with hits such as "Dance With Me, Henry", "At Last", "Tell Mama", and "I'd Rather Go Blind" for which she claimed she wrote the lyrics. She faced a number of personal problems including drug addiction before making a musical resurgence in the late 1980s with the album, The Seven Year Itch.

She is regarded as having bridged the gap between rhythm and blues and rock and roll, and is the winner of six Grammys and 17 Blues Music Awards. She was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, the Blues Hall of Fame in 2001, and the Grammy Hall of Fame in both 1999 and 2008. Rolling Stone ranked James number 22 on their list of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time and number 62 on the list of the 100 Greatest Artists.

To end Part 1, it’s time to show the importance of “Always Something There to Remind Me” in the canon of popular music. This is the British version, a hit on both sides of the Atlantic, recorded by Sandie Shaw in late 1964. At least her producers come up with an ending that works.

Sandie Shaw: “Always Something There to Remind Me”

Next week: Part 2.

Thanks, STARWISE, for the pictures of our troops hard at work. The Alaska Army National Guard had to get into Cordova via boat...there are no roads in. God Bless our Guard troops for the help they provide at home, too. Thanks for spinning tunes as well. ((HUGS))

I heard that Chicago was getting snow too. You snug, safe, and warm?

I know .. look at the snow mountains .. unreal!
Had to be so tough to get there by boat and so slow.
Keeping nice and snug .. soup and sweaters .. ;)
Hope your birthday was good .. and you’re not buried
under snow .. AND you can enjoy some relaxation and
peaceful moments this weekend. HUGS!

I've been saving some of the best for last. I love the jazz bass lines and horns on this arrangement and although Etta is well past her prime (2009) and has lost several octaves, she makes the best of her baritone, is as espressive as ever and turns phrases as well as Sinatra ever did.

Etta actually wrote the lyrics to this tune with composer Ellington "Fugi" Jordan. Because she was having tax issues at the time she credited the words to her friend Billy Foster. The version with Dr. John was recorderded Live at the Ebony Showcase Theatre in Los Angeles, April 15th 1987 with Albert King on guitar and B.B. King's All-Stars. The video is stunning and a real showstopper.

When I was young, the term “hummer” meant — ahem! — something else.

Hey, daddy-o, that sounds like square-talk--make that cube-talk!
