Tunes For The Troops
RIP January 25, 1938 - January 20, 2012
Etta James (born Jamesetta Hawkins; January 25, 1938 January 20, 2012) was an American singer whose style spanned a variety of music genres including blues, rhythm and blues, rock and roll, soul, gospel and jazz. Starting her career in the mid 1950s, she gained fame with hits such as "Dance With Me, Henry", "At Last", "Tell Mama", and "I'd Rather Go Blind" for which she claimed she wrote the lyrics. She faced a number of personal problems including drug addiction before making a musical resurgence in the late 1980s with the album, The Seven Year Itch.
She is regarded as having bridged the gap between rhythm and blues and rock and roll, and is the winner of six Grammys and 17 Blues Music Awards. She was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, the Blues Hall of Fame in 2001, and the Grammy Hall of Fame in both 1999 and 2008. Rolling Stone ranked James number 22 on their list of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time and number 62 on the list of the 100 Greatest Artists.

Dusty Springfield had made her first splash with tunes by Mike Hawker and Ivor Raymonde, the fathers of Euro-rock. She now turned to Hal David and Burt Bacharach for her largest hit of all. Note the muted trumpet and tympani in the arrangement.

Purge Out The Old
January 21, 2012
Several days before their New Year celebration, many Chinese families give their home a thorough cleaning. Theres a Cantonese saying that goes: Wash away the dirt on ninyabaat (28th day of month 12). They practice this tradition because it is believed the cleaning sweeps away the bad luck of the preceding year and makes their homes ready for good luck.
When the apostle Paul wrote to the believers at Corinth, he asked them to give their lives a thorough cleansingnot for good luck but to please God. He told them to purge out the old leaven (1 Cor. 5:7).
Paul used the Jewish feasts of Passover and Unleavened Bread (Ex. 12:1-28) as a backdrop for this statement. Leaven (yeast) was a symbol of sin and corruption and was to be removed from Jewish homes to celebrate these festivals (Deut. 16:3-4). Because Jesus is the Passover Lamb who cleanses us from sin, the Corinthians were to scour their hearts and remove the leaven of sexual immorality, malice, and wickedness from their lives and their assembly (1 Cor. 5:9-13).
Out of gratitude to Jesus for His sacrifice, let us purge out the sin in our lives and celebrate the holiness that only He can bring.
The holiness of God demands
A heart thats pure within,
Yet grace unites with holiness
To purge the heart from sin. D. De Haan
Purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.
1 Corinthians 5:7

The movie A House is Not a Home was a forgettable film about famous madame Polly Adler, and this song didnt appear in the film, which makes it an exploitation song. But Dionne Warwick did such a fine job with this Hal David and Burt Bacharach tune that Im still surprised it didnt do better on the charts in 1964. She does a magnificent job with this song. (I love her cheekbones, too.) Note that by now Bacharach doesnt let little things like time signatures get in his way. He lets the tune and its pulse follow the lyrical line.

Its time for one of my personal favorites from Hal David and Burt Bacharach from the summer of 1964. This Dionne Warwick effort is as close to perfection as imaginable. There is the delicate use of cymbals and other instruments I cant even identify.
