Charleston, South Carolina (CNN) - With Newt Gingrich creeping up in the polls and potentially on the cusp of a South Carolina victory, one of Mitt Romney's senior advisers sought to change expectations ahead of Saturdays' pivotal presidential primary.
Though his campaign has competed aggressively in the state and is hungry for a win here, Romney strategist Stuart Stevens said the idea of a loss to Gingrich on Saturday is not far-fetched.
"Do I think we could lose South Carolina? Sure. Of course," Stevens told CNN after Thursday's presidential debate in Charleston.
"The very idea that we are sting where two days before South Carolina, having won New Hampshire, having done very well in Iowa, and the question is 'Could Romney lose South Carolina,' is such an absurd question."
"The idea should be does he have a chance in South Carolina," Stevens claimed.
When it was noted that Romney had a 10-point lead over Gingrich as recently as Tuesday, Stevens shook his head.
"These things were always going to close," he said. "I think it's very competitive. I think it's a four-way race. The whole race is very fluid."

I guess you didn’t get the gentle sarcasm... “genius.”
Go Newt!
Apparently I attracted another turd.
Your boy Santorum has plenty of liberal votes and utterances on his record. Perhaps people around here should refer to you has not a “real conservative”.
Testify my brother!
I have learned not to get into spitting contests with nasty 'old (pseudo-con) farts' like you. Especially if you chew tobacco.
Because the result is that I end up getting as dirty as the inside of your filthy mouth, and it just doesn't accomplish anything.
So, I'll leave the conversation happily, knowing that I actually AM more conservative than you (no brag, just fact), and you may continue with the delusion that being ugly is the sign of 'true' conservatism.
Peace. :)
Apparently so. That'll show us all.
Indeed.
We all know that all 'true' conservatives want four more years of Marxism.
“He even got booed. How can a candidate win, when he is booed at debate”? It depends on who is doing the booing and why . If he is being booed by a pack of freaks , that is a good thing.
Agree... BTTT.
Good post !
Newt 40
Mitt 30
also rans’ split 30.
It is sad to see a once great language like English turned into gibberish buy ignorant usage. You and your fellow neocons are not conservative. Not in any real sense of the word. I know you won't take my word on that so how about Willam F Buckley?
It is the job of centralized government (in peacetime) to protect its citizens lives, liberty and property. All other activities of government tend to diminish freedom and hamper progress. The growth of government (the dominant social feature of this century) must be fought relentlessly. In this great social conflict of the era, we are, without reservations, on the libertarian side.
You are a neocon, neocons like nation building wars and they like big government. They just don't like paying for it so they pass the cost (debt) on to the next generation. Bush was a neocon and so is everyone running except Paul. Paul is a real conservative, it's to bad he is 76 years old and does not have a chance of winning. I'll vote for him in the primary since I vote conservative.
VERY nicely enumerated points, thank you so much for laying them out like that.
Romney was booed in the last two debates. The first time, he looked really surprised.
“Don’t you know I am ‘inevitable’? Why are you booing?”
We were booing him here at home as well. ;^)
De Nada
oops, lol, I spotted that just as I hit the post button, well I freely admit I make more then a few typos. sometimes minor and sometimes not. Oh well,
I’m one of the biggest idiots around here.
No problemo.
You haven't got a clue. Which is, of course, why you are a passionate advocate for the loopy and liberal Ron Paul.
I don't know your age, but I'm guessing, as a devoted Paulite, that you're very young and that I was steeped in real conservatism several decades before you were born.
At any rate, if you want to be taken seriously on a conservative board, give up the LIBERAL epithet, 'neocon.' It blows your cover.
