The victim served in Vietnam until he was shot in the eye, McClay said. Since then, the Purple Heart recipient has worked in veterans support services, helping others find jobs.
Police are searching for a gang of six teens who allegedly beat and seriously injured a 64-year-old Vietnam War veteran apparently "just for sport" in Olney Tuesday evening.
The victim, whose name has not been released, was walking on the 5000 block of North 5th Street on his way to a bus stop about 6 p.m. when the assailants pounced.
The teenagers were walking a short distance behind him when they apparently decided, "just for sport, to beat this guy down," said Philadelphia Police Lt. George McClay, of the Northwest Detective Division.
"One kid breaks off from the pack, beats this guy down, and the rest of them join in," McClay said.
The victim was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center with serious injuries to his head, face and hand.
The assault was so severe that McClay said police intend to charge the attackers with attempted murder.
"Someone knows these kids," McClay said. "They're from the neighborhood, we know they are. We're looking for one or two names . . . This behavior can't be let go."
The attackers, who were caught on a surveillance camera in the area, were described as 16 to 18 years old, black and Hispanic. One was wearing an orange hooded sweatshirt and jeans.
Anyone with information is asked to call police.

I want these type of people to pay their debts to society. That means paying back every single cent of tax dollars that have been wasted on their pathetic existence. I might mellow out a little if they simply started saying thank you and not demanding us to degrade our standards of living to support their lazy ass welfare lifestyle.

I live less than 5 miles from Newark NJ’s Prudential Center, and have never been/will never go there because Newark at night (in any part) is dangerous. They moved the NJ Devils there to try and bring the whites, and it didn’t work; they have no way of keeping working people there after 5 pm.
As someone who has wondered how whites stayed in South Africa after their government fell, I can’t point fingers if I’m going into North Zaire to watch a hockey match.
