South Carolina PPP Poll - Gingrich 34%, Romney 28%
PPP ^ | Jan. 19th, 2012 | PPP

Posted on 01/19/2012 10:22:31 AM PST by Eurotwit

Raleigh, N.C. – Newt Gingrich led Mitt Romney 34-28 in PPP's South Carolina polling last night, the first of what will be three nights of tracking. Ron Paul at 15%, Rick Santorum at 14%, Rick Perry at 5%, and Buddy Roemer at 3% round out the field. This is not a case of Romney imploding. His support has been pretty steady in the 28- 30% range in our South Carolina polling so far. But Gingrich has risen from 23% to 34% over the last two weeks, benefiting from declining support for Santorum and also from undecided voters moving into his camp. It's clear that the debate Monday night did a lot to help Gingrich's prospects in the state. 56% of voters say they watched it, and with those folks Gingrich's lead over Romney is 43-27. Romney still has a 29-22 advantage on Gingrich with those who didn't tune in. Gingrich is starting to consolidate his support with some of the more conservative parts of the South Carolina electorate. He has a 50-18 advantage on Romney with Tea Party voters. He's up 39-23 with those describing themselves as 'very conservative.' And he even has a 37-20 advantage with evangelicals.

Yeah, but if PPP said the sun rises in the east, I’d want a second opinion.

In this case, however, the trend seems consistent. Rasmussen and Insider Advantage also show Gingrich in the lead, but by smaller margins.

Let’s wait and see what the “open marriage” claims do.

This is quite dramatic. I hope people tune in tonight and that Gingrich has another stormer :)

I’m thinking it’s going to be:

Gingrich 40%
Mitt 30%
Santy 15%
Ron 10%

Santorum won in Iowa, Gingrich poised to win in SC...looks like conservatives are actively and effectively resisting the push by establishment Republicans, to have RINOs rammed down our throats. My day is now brightened.

Though they say this:

“Rick Perry’s exit from the race shouldn’t make a huge difference. He was only polling at
5% and his supporters were evenly divided on their second choice with 26% each picking
Gingrich and Romney. “

However this was obviously before Perry’s endorsement.

If there truly is a “swingers” vote, Newt gets another bump.

And if there’s a “divorced” vote, bump Newt up yet another five!

But if there’s a “I can’t stand my ex-wife” vote, Newt beats the Mormon by a LANDSLIDE!!!

Romney just isn't going to go much above 30% if there is a conservative alternative.

He will never be more than a slightly lesser evil than Obama!

The ex-wife’s “interview” may be responsible for Gingrich’s upward surge.

Good news. Overwhelmingly, Perry’s votes will go to Gingrich.
I am not one to judge one’s personal life, and Team Romney
and the remaining contenders will have a hard time going forward, sounding once again like
they’re working for Team Obama, should they refine their talking points on this issue, whether it’s done through surrogates of Santorum (James Dobson), or Romney (Gingrich’s 2nd wife who’s just made her statements).
Primary voters , ironically but logically, will decide just what perspective they want to put the “personal” issues in, just as they did for Clinton, when they knew he was an alley-cat going in in ‘92, and was empowered to continue his ways in ‘98 with Monica Lewinsky.
At least Gingrich made it clear he was unhappy in his first two marriages, and wanted out. He didn’t stick a cigar in an interns privates halfway through his SECOND term as President. The Clinton marriage was a sham, and was kept intact ONLY for the sake of continuing their big-time political careers. At least Gingrich looks to have done it
the way a reasonable man would have done it.
Gingrich for President!
