The Gingrich campaign launched a preemptive strike as news spread that ABC plans to broadcast a potentially damaging interview with Newt Gingrichs second ex-wife on Thursday just two days before Saturdays crucial South Carolina primary.
Gingrichs daughters (from his first marriage) Kathy Lubbers and Jackie Cushman came to their fathers defense in a letter released by his presidential campaign.
The failure of a marriage is a terrible and emotional experience for everyone involved. Anyone who has had that experience understands it is a personal tragedy filled with regrets, and sometimes differing memories of events, the daughters said in the letter addressed to ABC News Leadership.
We will not say anything negative about our fathers ex-wife. He has said before, privately and publicly, that he regrets any pain he may have caused in the past to people he loves, the letter said.
The daughters also said the former House Speaker intends to stay on message, suggesting one thing he will not be talking about in South Carolina is the ABC interview.

are you talking about Maianne having a boyfriend?
No problem. :) I’d encourage anyone to copy it and pass it around as they wish.
Now that I’ve had my first morning cup of coffee, I can comment on this.
I don’t think it matters if they release the interview or not. Unless she comes out sayinh that Newt was Gay or a cross dresser, (although I at times wear those sheer knee highs when I’m flying), this will pass.
PLUS, AMERICANS HATE THIS KIND OF THING. AND NEWT ALWAYS FINDS A WAY TO EXPLAIN HIS BAGGAGE BETTER THAN ANYONE.
Does anyone think REagan was squeeky clean?
YOu keep your private life, like Obama has done, out of the news.
In summary, I don’t think it will matter in the long run. People like Ann Coulter will go crazy with excitement over this...It will keep Santorum in the race...which we knew all along...
BUT THE KING MAKERS OUT THERE... RUSH LIMBAUGH FOR EXAMPLE...WILL NOT STAND FOR IT.
The best response to this is no response.
Unless of course something doesn’t come out that Newt was caught by Marianne fondling her cat’s @ss dressed up like a sheep dog.

VERY GOOD!!!!
Everyone should read the article. It says reams about Newt. Then jusdge for yourself.s There is considerabe depth in the man. I for one feel he would be a better president having experienced the fact that we as humans are not all perfect.

Thays what he was refering to.
All I have to say is,
IF JESUS HIMSELF WAS RUNNING FOR THE PRESIDENCY, DRUDGE AND ANN COULTER WOULD FIND REASONS FOR US NOT TO VOTE FOR HIM.
What was the point of the interview... you’ve lost me.
Sorry I can’t give you the details you want this was several months ago. He was a staffer for Newt and they were discussing Newts divorce, the bs story about his wife having cancer and some of his other baggage. He mentioned she bought a house in the same town her mother lived in so nshe would have a place to stay when she went to visit. Kind of suggesting she was keeping a boyfriend on the side and using her mother as an excuse for going back and forth. The one question he raised was why she didn’t just stay at her mothers house which was very large and quite nice. Hinting also that on many trips she never bothered to go see her mother. Sorry but thats about all I have, I’m 60 years old and have enough trouble trying to remember where I left the remote. Maybe Neal has an arcive of his guests.
You are not alone.
With all seriousness who out of all the candidates would trounce zero right out of the gate and keep him on the defense? Whats the objective here?
I personally have never cared much for Gingrich, but then again I've not accomplished anything much as a politician, either.
I think I prefer the character of Perry, along with whatever set of character "flaws" he may have also.
I cannot say for a certainty which one of them would win, much less make a better president, but it looks like both or either of them will have difficulty securing the nomination.
If I could have my own way in hindsight, I'd almost prefer Newton to have been an adviser to Perry, similar to the role Rove played for Bush.
As it stands now I do think Gingrich, despite his own baggage and possibly some double-edged sword like temperament issues, does stand a better chance of defeating Obama than Romney. The real trouble is that I'm getting the sense that the electorate by and large isn't sick enough of Obaba yet to dump him for any Republican we now have. It would take the skills of a Reagan, him being able to reach down through and into the masses and inspire more than repulse (he did repulse some) to blow out a populist Democrat who in a match up with one of the Republicans, has just about all of the "black" vote, all of the queer vote, all the greeny vote, all the liberal/socialist vote, just about all the labor vote, and speaking of labor, all the votes of those who desire big Gov, be they government employees, or whomever.
It seems like the Bush Admin set us back a ways, by not communicating well. I wish I could say Bush's fault, and make it all go away. That was the simplicity of the Obama campaign. Hopey-Changey, I'm not Bush but McCain is, which made the dem voter brain sign off (if it is every fully engaged) and the last presidential campaign easy as pie, once they were able to stuff enough ballot boxes to defeat the Hildabeast, end of story.
Rope, tree, journalist, some assembly required.
Bigger than an American president actively destroying the nation? Not likely.
The best part of your post is the end.
Bush did set us back. I can’t recall the guy talking ever about conservative issues. Never.
Newt on the other hand answers every question as a teaching moment about conservatism.
I think in the end THIS will win the day. Especially if he can articulate it with monorities.
I MEAN THINK ABOUT THIS, AND WHEN I HEARD THIS I KNEW INSTANTLY THAT NEWT WAS DIFFERENT THAT ALL THE REST.
NEWT IN THE HEAT OF A SC PRIMARY GOES TO A BLACK CHURCH. ONLY 2% OF THE ELECTORATE ARE BLACK, SO GOING THERE FOR THE CANDIDATES SHOULD BE A WASTED OF TIME.
BUT NEWT GOES, AND TRIES TO PERSUADE THEM INTO THINKING DIFFERENTLY ABOUT THEIR COMMUNITY AND POVERTY.
DOES HE WIN ANYONE OVER? PROBABLY A FEW.
But this told me about the man. He is the only one capable of following Obama around this country to debate him. Obama cannot hide from him. If he goes to the latino community, Newt is right there behind him...NAACP? Newt is ther too.
The private life is one thing, but he is our candidate for better or for worse.
Isn’t ABC owned by GE? Isn’t GE Owned by the Obama admin?
Where are those who complained about Hallaburton?
Hypocrites
Amen, do not let the MSM choose our nominee!!!
BTW did you know that only 47% of the vote in NH was Republican?
Yes, divorce dishing is why we have Obama in the first place isn’t it? A vote here could signal to the press that we are or are not done playing this gotcha game. If this were their preferred candidate it would be “old news” and/or “Private/personal”.
Anyone else steals his lead and we’ll be out of candidates.
