Obama administration officials would not confirm whether President Obama called for direct talks with Iran, after an Iranian lawmaker claimed Wednesday that the president floated the proposal in a secret letter to the Islamic Republic's supreme leader.
The White House acknowledged the letter and reiterated that the door remains open for Iran to return to international talks over its nuclear program.
"It remains available to Iran to this day," White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said, adding that the U.S. position has not changed.
But he did not confirm whether the president called for direct talks. The letter also warned Tehran against closing the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Iran has threatened to close the waterway, the route for about one-sixth of the global oil flow, because of new U.S. sanctions over its nuclear program.
Conservative Iranian lawmaker Ali Motahari revealed the content of the letter days after the Obama administration said it was warning Iran through public and private channels against any action that threatens the flow of oil from the Persian Gulf.
"In the letter, Obama called for direct talks with Iran," the semiofficial Fars news agency quoted Motahari as saying Wednesday. "The letter also said that closing the Strait of Hormuz is (Washington's) red line."
"The first part of the letter contains threats and the second part contains an offer for dialogue," he added.

My gosh, what a surprise!
The WH is changing their story already!
This sure adds to their credibility and to their string of great diplomatic successes!
Paging Jimmy Carter-please report to the lobby.
Deja vu...
Hey, there is that “without conditions” comment Obama promised.
See people? He did promise something and he actually did it.
“Dear Imam Khameini:
Thank you for returning the drone, but it looks alot smaller than the one we lost. Maybe a mix up- Can you please check it out?
PBUH.
Warmest regards,
Bozo”
At this time it cannot be confirmed or denied, but Obama must have said, “OH MOMMIE! *&(*Y&& *##@(& #&!#%” when he first heard this letter talked about in public.
LMAO
Hey Barack, nine year olds rule huh.
Geez... this is so blindingly simple that even I can figure it out, yet somehow so many people are just so clueless.
Just in case any stupid people or Democrats (I repeat myself, I know) are reading this, let me make it simple enough for even them to understand.
THEY.DO.NOT.WANT.BETTER.RELATIONS!!!
Iran, Nicaragua, etc... making nice to them does NOT work. It does not work because they NEED America as an enemy more than they could possibly benefit from having better relations.
Now obviously, I am talking about the people running the governments, not the citizens of those countries. But the Mullahs and other politicians — whose only real goal is to stay in power — have invested too much rhetoric and whipped up too much hysteria with their anti-Americanism to abandon that plank.
Nor, with this contemptible pathetic loser running the place, do they feel any specific urgency. Obama has proved that he can be bluffed. I really don’t think Iran is that worried about him.
All he’s doing is making himself (and us) look even weaker.
There he goes again, legitimizing the terrorist regime yet again! And some wonder why the people won’t rise up again like they did three years ago. The people are doing what every US business is doing: Not until the islamomarxist is gone!
Barrack Hussein Obama does it because he is a radical Muslim.
