Newt Gingrich identified the very core of conservatism with his remarks in the first South Carolina presidential debate. His vision of conservatism is the one that most Republicans don't understand and most Democrats don't want you to know.
Gingrich was asked to explain his views on work ethic and the government erosion of that ethic through (at least in part) federal and state entitlement programs like food stamps. He suggested that poor high school students be given opportunities to perform janitorial services in their schools as a way to earn money and to learn how to work at a job.
He then cut to the chase on why a jobs program like that would benefit everyone involved: "I believe every American of every background has been endowed by their Creator with the right to pursue happiness," he said. "And [even] if that makes liberals unhappy, I'm going to continue to find ways to help poor people learn how to get a job, learn how to get a better job, and learn some day to own the job."
So there you have it -- the very practical essence of what it means to be a conservative today. It's not about keeping taxes low, although that generally makes the most sense. It's not about being hawkish in conflicts around the globe, although a strong national defense -- even outside our borders -- is crucial. It's especially not about favoring one group -- big corporations or small businesses, white or black, poor or rich -- over another.
Conservatism is about conserving our unalienable rights -- among these being life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness -- and preserving, protecting, and promoting those rights for the benefit of everyone in the country.

(His vision is the one that most Republicans don’t understand)
Thanks, we love being called “stupid.”
Nobody said that stupidity was involved. I think there’s been so much rhetoric in this campaign about who’s the most “conservative” that it is hard for people to sort out the essence of the concept. They’ll look at one issue but not at the whole overall philosophy.
[Republican] is as [Republican] does.
If the shoe fits...
If Newt continues to do that, reject the premise of most of their questions and logic, make them look like fools, he'll win over more folk.
People are tired of the MSM bias and no-one confronting them on it.
Newt is a selfish, egomaniac. And, a big government solutions guy. He just claims that his big government can be efficient because he will use lean six sigma process. Whatever....
It’s begun. It will get worse. This headline in the Huffington Post is the opening salvo meant only to entice others to ask questions. Callista Gingrich Called A ‘Mistress For 8 Years’ By James Dobson: Report.
It will leave everyone defending Newt the same way Cainiacs defended Cain. What’s the difference? The headline is well-placed below a story of Sarah Palin suggesting everyone vote in SC for Newt. That way she and her Christianity are brought into question. The other story: Bill Clinton & Newt Gingrich Shared Secrets About Their Affairs, Says Dick Armey suggests that Bill Clinton came close to blackmailing Gingrich by threatening to reveal his affairs.
EXCUSE ME, Folks!!! He can talk and I agree with everything he says. He’s a professional talker. He’s a professor who gives lectures. Of course he can speak.
Is this what you want all over again? For God’s sake. He won’t be able to get a message out because of this crap. His election to the presidency? It would have to be stealth. I really can’t handle it and am open for suggestions on how people really think he can take Romney just by having two conservatives drop out.
I'm glad the author defined conservatism for us. Now, can she explain what it means to be a "realpolitik Wilsonian" since that is how Newt has defined himself?
“Of course he can speak.”
And he speaks without the benefit of a teleprompter!
“And he speaks without the benefit of a teleprompter”
Did you miss the point?
“It will leave everyone defending Newt the same way Cainiacs defended Cain.”
There’s a difference. While I would vote for either man for the nomination, I LIKED Herman.
I already KNOW about Newts’ past. I don’t care enough about it enough to make me allow Romney the nomination.
” I dont care enough about it enough to make me allow Romney the nomination.”
Oh. I get it. I’m a dummy. It’s just about the nomination. Stopping Romney. It has nothing to with the election. You don’t know anything about Newt. But you will.
You’ll spend all your time saying, “yeah, but.”
I guess the fight is everything. I suppose you’ve taken time to notice that the Obama has rejected the Keystone Pipe project. The whole country should be marching in the streets...especially Conservatives....but we’re too busy making sure Romney isn’t the nominee. Governor Perry is outraged beyond belief. It was one of his many efforts to bring jobs to America. He worked tirelessly with other governors and key personnel. He would approve it in a minute if he were president. By the way...just curious. What does Newt do for a living? Santorum? Romney?
“You dont know anything about Newt.”
Wanna bet?
“What does Newt do for a living?”
He is an author and until deciding to run for President was also a contributor on Fox News.
I am very sorry that your candidate is doing so poorly and will not argue with you as you appear to care for Rick Perry a great deal and frankly I don’t like Newt at all enough to argue on his behalf.
You’re a good person. LOL. I have to learn to be, obviously. I’m stunned at the opinion of Governor Perry. It doesn’t make sense to me. Thanks. I think you may have even settled me down a bit.
Thank you and FWIW I think Perry would be a good President, just probably not going to happen this go ‘round. He’ll still be young enough in ‘16 to either pick up the pieces from the Obomanation or to challenge (((shudder))) President Mitt in the primary.
