Fast food made faster: Burger King gives home delivery a try
Los Angeles Times ^ | January 17, 2012 | Rene Lynch

Just what this country needs: a Whopper and fries delivered to its front door.

Burger King, in a bid to catch up with McDonalds and take a bite out of the competition posed by fast-food rivals such as Wendys, is experimenting with home delivery. Customers can order online or by phone, and the next thing they know -- ding-dong! -- dinner is at the front door.

Yep, they don’t taste as good as they used to. They also cut back on some of the toppings. If they don’t change it back they will go the same way as Little Caesar’s pizza. Little Caesar’s Pizza use to be the best crust. Now their crust is the worst.

There is probably a market for it.... but is it consistently enough of one to justify the overhead and cost?

Lets face it, decide order in tonight.. another choice there is not a bad thing. And If I am already home, and don’t feel like getting in my car and driving to get it, having it delivered makes it a viable option.

But, and this is the big but, will you get enough consistent orders to justify the cost of having drivers, additional insurance costs, etc etc etc. Not to mention the general logistics of delivery itself... That’s what I am not sure of.

I know a while ago the KFC near me experimented with delivery, and it didn’t work out. I don’t know how BK will handle it.

I think personally BK’s biggest issue, is simply food quality inconsistency.

McD’s is crap, but its consistent crap.

Wendy’s is a bit better, and consistently a bit better.

BK, you never know what you are going to get.. you could get a charred burger that was overgrilled and then sat in the holding bin way to long only to be overnuked when reheated, or you can get something halfway decent, and you really have no idea which one you are going to get, even at the same store, let alone across the chain.

Also, I think BK needs to do better with public relations, I wrote an app that showed all the restaurants with play structures for parents on the go so they could let their kids play when on a road trip.. Guess What? BK isn’t in the app because in spite of repeated attempts to interact with the company to get the information I couldn’t get it.. so the app is out there with only McD’s, Chick Fil-A’s, Chuck E Cheeses... So BK, you are missing out on potential sales simply because dealing with your corporate office was impossible.

Be there before I know it? I doubt it. I bet it takes a looong time. If they can’t have my Double Whopper With Cheese (DOWHOPwCH) to me at the very moment I THINK about stuffing it down my gullet like Wimpy, then I don’t care. I don’t care. I. DON’T. CARRRRRE!

When we go for burgers, we go to a little local joint down the road. Greasy, dripping with fat, but the best burgers in down, hands down...............

The earlier article said the tests were trying to address just that.

Delivering burger “kits” might work. Package the buns, lettuce and condiments separate from a container with the hot burger and fries?

BK burgers are OK, but I sure don’t detect any improvement in the fries.

Yes, that was a good idea...which is why they won’t do it.

...and it's almost impossible to keep fries warm.

That's where the MFT (mobile frying technology) comes into play. ;)
