MONTEVIDEO Unconditional bail was set at $750,000 this morning for Darek Jon Nelson, 24, of Montevideo, who faces murder and manslaughter charges for the stabbing death of 18-year-old Vinessa Lozano Friday night in Montevideo.
Nelson made his first appearance before District Judge Dwayne Knutsen in Chippewa County District Court.
According to the complaint, Nelson began planning to kill Lozano on Jan. 9, after he became upset that Lozano didnt come to his home on Jan. 8. Nelson told investigators that he hid a knife in his hooded sweatshirt while he worked his shift at the Pizza Ranch restaurant. He then ambushed co-worker Lozano from behind as she left the restaurant, stabbing her more than 30 times.
The last portion of the stabbing was captured on the video recorder of the first Montevideo Police squad car responding to the scene. Lozano also identified Nelson as her killer to the responding officer. She later died at the Chippewa County-Montevideo Hospital.
During the incident, Nelson also chased away another restaurant worker who attempted to come to Lozanos aid during the stabbing.
Lozanos mother and stepfather, Robin and Dalton Savoy, of Montevideo and her father, Eric Lozano, of Willmar, attended the hearing. The Savoys said they have been overwhelmed by community support since their daughters death.
I wish we had the death penalty in Minnesota, Eric Lozano said after the hearing.

Cherish and polish that disgust as much as you please! But it does no good to you nor anyone else.
The girl, the mother, the daughter, the co-worker is dead. She died at the hands of a predator who should better have been avoided. What were the circumstances that marked her as prey in his eyes?
The story as reported so far only tells so much. We know she was beautiful and had an endearing smile. It appears she had a compassion for the oddball of a man.
Single mothers are easy prey to many cads and scoundrels, a smile, a beauty and a kind heart are not adequate protections.
As I said, over the years I’ve seen it a number of times. It is strange, and sad.
Please don’t be one of those people that want the date and thread numbers.
Predators take prey of all types, true — yet “single mothers” are much more likely to be victims of crime and abuse.
It’s curious that your worldview doesn’t seem to include the possibility that a predator might target someone that doesn’t deserve to die.
Is it just some women you have this problem with... Or is it all women?
Well Duh. Girls who are neglected or abused are more likely to become sexually active and at an early age and thus more likely to become unwed mothers.
Girls who shack up with are more likely to suffer domestic violence and also be unwed mothers.
Girls who do drugs or binge drink are also more likely to be victims of sexual assault and other crimes and more likely to become unwed mothers (BC is hard to remember when you are strung out).
Correlation is not causation. That two things occur together does not mean one caused the other.
Sir. It is the idea that ANYONE “deserves to die” which is perverted. No one deserves to die.
It’s a perverted idea because it is a death-centric idea. Our Creator and Master, G-d grants each soul a chance to live in this world. HIS is a life-based outlook. When HE decides our time of life is done then we go. Not until then.
We do have the right, or the duty, to kill in certain cases — this is known as the death penalty, or to save someone from a killer. We don’t decide, we can not even begin to determine, if a given person “deserves to live”. We only can decide to apply that right in a case of defense against a killer, or through a careful process of justice via our cultural duty to carry out the death penalty for a very limited set of major crimes, once the court has heard all the evidence and testimony and deliberated to a verdict.
I think it is a blessing that most people haven’t had to learn to think like a predator. Indeed in this type of innocence of mind in the case of the motives of the predator is precious enough to mankind that throughout history viable cultures have outlawed “single motherhood”.
When such folly is outlawed, then most folks do not have to consider in harsh actuality of the mind of the predators of the vulnerable.
Unfortunately such innocence of mind is not permissible today. Why? Because our culture has come to condone, to support and even to celebrate “single motherhood”. Because of that you and I, all of us, must come to know the mind of the predators like the killer in this sad case.
Those are the people who are too lazy to do their own research. I get that too, many times.
Because it looks like something the perp would drive.
I know. Anyone that’s been here for a while realises that over time they read a lot of stuff and the gist of these replies are remembered, but not the details.

Oh please, men have been abusing women and children forever, except when other men take responsibility and put a stop to it. The best way to prevent unwed mothers is for men to keep their dicks under control.
It has nothing to do with predators singling out “single” mothers. They prey on women and children because like wolves preying on pregnant cows and calves, it is EASIER.
Doesn’t matter what century or society you live in.
Reality doesn't exist to please. Men do not abuse women or children, that is to say that MEN ARE MEN, and not to be labeled in that mean way by the few who speak meanly using the uncommon example of the few men who do so abuse to smear all men.
But "single mothers" are prey -- that is a defining, intrinsic characteristic of being a single, never married, mom. It is a reason why in "single motherhood" is outlawed in sane cultures. Sane cultures discourage social behaviors that are likely to provoke crime, and to encourage behaviors that reduce the chance producing crime. The statistics of crime bear out the danger of being a single mother [1]. And it gets worse too.
"Single mothers" raise children who are far more likely to be criminals, to be anti-social. The 1995 Cato report [2] says "Nearly 70 percent of juveniles in state reform institutions come from fatherless homes, as do 43 percent of prison inmates"
That rate of bad behavior by the children raised by single women has gotten worse. Why? We infer that from another social trend noted by the Cato Report: "Research indicates a direct correlation between crime rates and the number of single-parent families in a neighborhood." Since 1995 the both the percentage of "single mothers" and the concentration of them in neighborhoods has significantly increased.
That is why I opened my comments on this thread with a comment soon thereafter pulled by some moderator saying that it was, perhaps, a benefit to the surviving child to be raised by two-parents, presuming that the maternal grandmother and step-grandfather would raise the child.
The real victim is that child, but in the loss of the child's mother, there is also a chance at a better life. A real chance. Reality is very harsh on the children raised by "single mothers".
Ann Coulter has done a great job in putting the hard-to-handle pieces of the puzzle together, Hard to accept because our modern culture is so wrapped up in the crazy emotions of putting "victims" on a pedestal. And of all victims none so foolishly adored than the poor, struggling "single mother". Ann writes her 2009 book "Guilty"[3]:
All the figures are grim. According to the Index of Leading Cultural Indicators, children from single-parent families account for 63 percent of all youth suicides, 70 percent of all teenage pregnancies, 71 percent of all adolescent chemical/substance abuse, 80 percent of all prison inmates, and 90 percent of all homeless and runaway children."Single mothers" are easy prey. But they bring into the world their own victims. Their children. It is that child of the now dead young lady who is the real victim.
But can that young lady be blamed? She grew up in the time since Murphy Brown was hugely celebrated as a pathbreaking single mother heroine!
The famous single-mother Murphy Brown TV show story arc aired during the 1991-1992 season. On May 19, 1992, Vice President Dan Quayle gave a speech where he criticized the Murphy Brown character for "ignoring the importance of fathers by birthing a child alone". One year and two weeks later, on June 2nd, 1993, Vinessa Lazano was born.
Does that bother you at all? Does the way the cultural elites shoved the dangers of "single motherhood" down a upon the unwary, upon the innocent, upon the generation yet to be born?

What bothers me is your bizarre belief that predators prey on single mothers because they are single mothers. They do not.
They prey upon them because they are women, their single status or their status has nothing to do with it. It’s all about their gender, not their marital or reproductive status.
Further, you seem to blame single mothers for their status as if they reproduced in a petri dish.
If men were MEN, they wouldn’t be creating single mothers, now would they. Nor would they create an atmosphere or culture of abusing/exploiting women, which is exactly what porn is. Men have all sorts of excuses and rationalizations for their behavior and choices, but it still boils down to using and abusing women for their own personal pleasure and NOT taking responsibility for their behavior, either as an individually or collectively as a gender group.
Quit blaming women, they didn’t get in this mess on their own. Even feminism was driven behind the scenes by MEN who saw it as a fast track to “free love” and access to women’s bodies without responsibility for them or to them.
