MONTEVIDEO Unconditional bail was set at $750,000 this morning for Darek Jon Nelson, 24, of Montevideo, who faces murder and manslaughter charges for the stabbing death of 18-year-old Vinessa Lozano Friday night in Montevideo.
Nelson made his first appearance before District Judge Dwayne Knutsen in Chippewa County District Court.
According to the complaint, Nelson began planning to kill Lozano on Jan. 9, after he became upset that Lozano didnt come to his home on Jan. 8. Nelson told investigators that he hid a knife in his hooded sweatshirt while he worked his shift at the Pizza Ranch restaurant. He then ambushed co-worker Lozano from behind as she left the restaurant, stabbing her more than 30 times.
The last portion of the stabbing was captured on the video recorder of the first Montevideo Police squad car responding to the scene. Lozano also identified Nelson as her killer to the responding officer. She later died at the Chippewa County-Montevideo Hospital.
During the incident, Nelson also chased away another restaurant worker who attempted to come to Lozanos aid during the stabbing.
Lozanos mother and stepfather, Robin and Dalton Savoy, of Montevideo and her father, Eric Lozano, of Willmar, attended the hearing. The Savoys said they have been overwhelmed by community support since their daughters death.
I wish we had the death penalty in Minnesota, Eric Lozano said after the hearing.

Gee, and he looks like such a nice young man.
How long before we find out this guy had serious mental problems?
Obviously there will be calls to outlaw all knives. /sarc/
Why should they?
All left wings thinkers have serious mental problems. They are all mentally ill and haters. They are filled with anger and the need to destroy others and control everything.....to make themselves “feel” ok.
Dunno - I think they should put the picture of the perp along with his/her victim. Seems to me that it tends to “glorify” the person. If the picture of the victim is out in general public (like this one) I’d say put it up together.
I once flushed something down the toilet that looked disturbingly like him!
I disagree. Seems like it is insensitive. What would you prefer, if it had been your daughter? I don’t think it’s anyone’s busines. Besides, people tend to make all kinds of remarks and judgements about a person, just by looking at their picture.
The picture was in the news. I just wanted to post it to show everyone here the life he took so horribly - 30 stab wounds!!!
If the picture is not in the news then it’s private, if it is then it’s public domain.
OK, but over the years, I’ve seen some pretty mean things written here about victims.
They set bail in a 1st degree murder case???
Do judges have to pass any sort of intelligence test to be a judge??
Looks a little crazy.....like a guy who would be part of one of those Occupy groups.
String him up...and let him die a slow death.
Seems as though this nut has a problem dealing with rejection. Couldnt handle it when a pretty girl doesnt want to come over and get molested by him.
Oh, she thinks shes to good for me does she! Well see about that!
Yaa, that dud is as corny as Kansas in August.
Another argument in favor of open or concealed carry.
If the co-worker had been armed Vinessa Lozano would probably be alive today.
