GOP presidential candidates seek Hispanic votes
Kansas City Star ^ | January 16, 2012 | WILLIAM E. GIBSON

..."Romney cree en nosotros," U.S. Rep.Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Fla., tells viewers of a TV ad in South Florida, amid scenes of swaying palm trees, the Miami skyline and smiling Cuban-Americans. "Romney believes in us."

...Despite his hard line on immigration, Romney has rounded up endorsements from Hispanic Republican leaders across Florida, while pollsters and political analysts predict he will draw solid support from Hispanic voters in the primary.....

"...I've already gotten three fliers from Romney - in Spanish," said DarioMoreno, a Miamipollster and professor at Florida International University who focuses on Hispanic voters. "CentralFlorida and the TampaBay area are where Newt could gain some ground by presenting a more moderate stance on immigration than Romney."

..While preparing his re-election campaign, Obama is courting Hispanic leaders, reasserting his support for an immigration overhaul and revising rules to make it easier for close family members of U.S. citizens to avoid deportation and work here legally. The new rules spare illegal-immigrant relatives from having to return to their home countries indefinitely while seeking permission to re-enter on grounds of family hardship.

...Most Hispanics in Florida are PuertoRicans, who are citizens, or Cuban-Americans, who are citizens or legal residents. They are not directly affected by the immigration debate. Some resent those who entered illegally.

....The immigration debate "has been turned into a political anti-immigrant and racist diatribe, when in reality it's a legal question," said Phil Tua, a PuertoRicanRepublican in Longwood, who supports Texas Gov.RickPerry in the primary. "Because of the rhetoric, you have Puerto Ricans marching in the streets for illegal aliens."

...."Our main concern is not immigration, it's job creation and making sure the country is safe," said Nancy Acevedo of Winter Springs, chairwoman of the National Republican Hispanic Alliance, who backs Perry but also likes Romney....

It's a longer article with more nuances and information and worth taking a few minutes to to read it. I had to edit for posting rules.

Basically elected "establishment" Republicans have dutifully lined up behind the chosen candidate, Mitt Romney and are selling him to their constituents.

Then about this:

While preparing his re-election campaign, Obama is courting Hispanic leaders, reasserting his support for an immigration overhaul and revising rules to make it easier for close family members of U.S. citizens to avoid deportation and work here legally. The new rules spare illegal-immigrant relatives from having to return to their home countries indefinitely while seeking permission to re-enter on grounds of family hardship.

Jan 8, 2012: Re: “hardship waivers” ….”House liberals cheer proposed Obama administration immigration reform …..”Becerra on Friday said Republicans left the White House no other option but to act unilaterally on immigration reform. President Obama is right," he said. "We can't wait for Republicans in Congress to stop playing this nasty game of politics, blocking immigration reform legislation, which is tearing families and America apart."

They are going to need more than hispanics once the GOP runs off conservatives with the Socialist Light candidate (Romney).

After a couple of weeks with little mention of the immigration issue, some reports say that Romney will revive the discussion at tonight’s debate. With Obama and Holder intervening to block SC’s new immigration law, it will have some more immediacy than even in previous debates.

I hope it is brought up.

Gov Rick Perry should have A LOT to say about this.

He wants the border sealed, drug cartels killed off and NO amnesty.

Gov. Perry and Texas have had to realistically deal with the mess wrought on border states by Federal action and inaction. There is no more we can do to alleviate the problem with the Fed's foot on our neck.

Every request is met with silence, scorn or a bandaid. Every legal challenge is met with the US Attorney Gen. and Federal Courts tying the state up in court. Federal immigration laws on the books are ignored and/or become a financial burden on the state and businesses.

Currently our redistricting map here in Texas is tied up in the Supreme Court (this will bump Texas out of the Super Tuesday vote) and our Photo Voter ID Bill is sitting on Eric Holder's desk, awaiting his approval.

Well...I must say I’m stunned at the gall of anyone who would attempt to court the Hispanic vote. Doesn’t everyone know that LaRaza Ricardo has Hispanics, Mexicans, illegals, immigrants, illegal immigrants, future offspring of illegals, Mexican workers, Mexican non-workers, all in his corner and it’s one of the reasons he’s shunned. Why would Obama, the Dems and the we-had-no-choice-Republican Congress
want this?
I love this part:” While preparing his re-election campaign, Obama is courting Hispanic leaders, reasserting his support for an immigration overhaul and revising rules to make it easier for close family members of U.S. citizens to avoid deportation and work here legally. “
Hello. We’re from your friendly Immigration office. How are you today? Are you and your family close?
‘spose this legislation covers Aunt Zeituni and Uncle Omar types too?

Indeed. There are some who will take their ball and go home, because they'd rather give us another 4 years of Obama.

I think Romney wants to bring illegal immigration up to contrast what he’s been saying to what Newt has been saying. I do wonder how Newt’s amnesty for folks who’ve been here illegally for 25 years, and go to church, etc., will go over while Obama and Holder are intervening to stop states’ immigration and voter ID laws.

The only one who has any intention of sealing the border is Gov. Rick Perry. Period.

The rest of them are blowing smoke and pandering for votes.

The man they are beating around the head as being “soft on illegals” is the only man, who as president (because he can do no more in his capacity as gov) will fix this mess; and NO amnesty. And a correct, enforced immigration policy will be followed.

....or they refuse to vote for the most successful US socialist in state government just because has an R behind his name.

It’s ok though....if you are a citizen who likes government mandates, socialized medicine, global warming alarmism, liberal judges, defining the rich at a dollar amount below Obama, and candidates that determine their political positions by which office they are running for....then Romney is the perfect candidate for you.

Myself....I’m not stupid enough to buy into the world is ending if Obama is elected rhetoric designed to push conservatives into voting for Obama Jr. I don’t vote for candidates just because they are black, white, or because they have an R behind their name.

I think he’s also the only one running who instituted the Dream Act on a state level.

That being said he’s better than Romney.

Hugh Hewitt has been saying that Romney will announce Marco Rubio as his VP choice. Hewitt is a major Romney sycophant and probably has inside information.

And while Marco Rubio seems to be a matinee idol around here he sure isn’t for me. He failed the test when he was asked about Arizona’s 1070 bill, the bill that has allowed Arizona to enforce the immigration laws that Obama, and Dubya for that matter, refused to enforce.

Rubio opposed Arizona 1070.

Meaning that he puts the interests of illegal aliens ahead of the interests of the beleaguered American citizens of Arizona. It’s either ethnic pandering or ethnic solidarity. Rubio isn’t someone I want in higher office. Florida can keep him.

We’ll see how it goes if immigration is discussed for any period of time tonight. I’m curious how it will impact Newt’s support in SC. He blames all his loss of support on negative ads run by Romney and Ron Paul, but his plunge began after an Iowa debate where voters really listened to his amnesty plan for illegals who’ve been here 25 years and go to church, etc.

I doubt any poll has separated those different events to determine how much each played in Newt’s loss of support, but I feel sure his amnesty plans cost him some support.

Who did John McCain endorse?

What’s McCain’s history on the issue?

What does that say about Romney and the issue?

Who did Sheriff Joe endorse?

What does THAT say?
