(Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has opened a wide lead over his rivals in the South Carolina primary election race, trouncing Newt Gingrich and gaining momentum in his march toward the party's nomination, a Reuters/Ipsos poll shows.
Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, could all but quash his rivals' presidential aspirations with a victory in South Carolina on January 21 after winning the first state-by-state nominating contests in Iowa and New Hampshire.
Voters in South Carolina - who have favored Republicans in nine of the last 10 presidential elections - appear to have shrugged off attacks on Romney by rivals who accuse him of killing jobs as a private equity executive for Bain Capital in the 1990s.
The poll showed 37 percent of South Carolina Republican voters back Romney. Congressman Ron Paul and former Senator Rick Santorum tied for second place with 16 percent support.
Gingrich, a former speaker of the House of Representatives, has fallen far back after holding a strong lead in South Carolina in December. He was in fourth place at 12 percent in the Reuters/Ipsos poll.

I said he will lose to OBama
I should vote for Romney because he is inevitable?
Why should i support Romney? I ask any Romney supporter? here
he couldn’t win a second term in MA so he didn’t run.
He lost Senate race to Ted Kennedy
He lost to McCain in 2008 Presidential Race
that’s the extent of his political record
We need somebody who can attract Hillary voters. like Rick Santorum.
not Romney
The #1 issue is Obamacare/Romneycare
At least Newt will give Obama a great debate
We need a clear contrast.
not someone who has to check with his advisor to go to the bathroom
he doesn’t know who he is
I’m putting my faith in Iowa.
How ‘bout you.
This poll - apparently - wasn’t done to report reality. It was done to create a reality. It’s purpose is to produce headlines. Headlines that drive perception/momentum for the media’s desired outcome. It will be mindlessly parroted non-stop regardless of it’s dubious validity.
Drive the herd cowboys!
I as well cannot hold my nose any longer. Sometimes not voting expressing your voice.
Santorum probably won Iowa. It was played up as a huge
win for the liberal Romney. If Santorum wanted, he could contest it and he would be the winner.
The liberal Romney has been running for president in adopted homestate of NH for years and manages to get 39% of the vote.
61% of the people in one of the most liberal states in the United States can’t stand the SOB.
But all you hear on the Romney Network, AKA FauxNSNBC is how Iowa and NH were historic victories for the liberal Romney because no GOP candidate had ever won them both.
The Romney Network, AKA FauxMSNBC News, is trying like to manipulate this GOP primary. They are trying everthing in their liberal arsenal to try and convence anybody that’ll listen that the liberal Romney WILL BE THE GOP NOMINEE, so no need in even bothering to go and vote because their favorite liberal is loved by the masses and conservatives are hated.
How is Santorum attracting Hillary voters?
Online poll - it won’t even be registered at the online polling conglomorates.
Even the liberals don’t take them seriously.
Hardly breaking news. LOL
(P.S. Only 40% Republicans in the SC Primary? Please. Wasn’t it over 70% the last three cycles?)
Tow pissant states and now this one with an OPEN primary and I’m supposed to even paying attention? Absurd. Why have a World Series? Super Bowl? World Cup? Just let whatever team who wins the first couple of games be crowned the best....
America can be a really stupid place sometimes...
There’s a certified count? Cool. Where?
You're as bad as the Perry die-hards. Your guy is sinking rapidly in all of the real polls, but there you stand, waving your pom-poms day and night.
Get a grip, friend. At least stop pretending that he's winning, when he clearly is not.
Apparently he is. Don’t question the narrative. ;)
My candidate won a primary.
Maybe Newt can finish third here.
Understand how surges work. The other polls suggest that there might be a chance of a Newt surge. The media knows that many of the great unwashed are highly influenced by polls. Got to nip any chance of a Newt surge in the bud.
Indeed. Those who believe in polls should realize that they are like statistics.
The most consistently accurate pollster seems to be Rasmussen, in whose latest poll:
South Carolina Primary: Romney 28%, Gingrich 21%, Santorum 16%, Paul 16%
Regardless of the outcome, you are correct we (USA) are headed for a time most of us knew would come eventuality but not necessary in our life times.
The Second Amendment was put in for just this fearful out come. (Man that does seem paranoid, not making my self as clear as I want, maybe I need more coffee another drink...who knows)
Ok, back to football, and the hubby is making me a gin/tonic....hope that helps.
Rasmussen is pretty standard for most of the SC polls in last few days as well. Mitt leading Newt by 2 to 7 points and Newt 5 to 8 ahead of Santorum.
I saw one yard sign in a grassy lot on Woodruff Road near Five Forks, but that’s the only one I’ve seen.
Now who goes to a Reuters website to vote but liberals. This online poll is pure BS. It just goes to show that the liberals are afraid of Newt the most. GO NEWT GO!
I was warning people that this was in the cards. But, nobody listened

Otherwise, let he is without sin cast the first stone.
