Why Romney's 'dog on car roof' story makes him unfit to be president
Fox News ^ | January 13, 2012 | Lanny Davis

It might be unseemly to bring this up just as Mitt Romney celebrates his win in New Hampshire on Tuesday night and seems to be a strong front-runner for the GOP nomination. But the story of his putting his dog in a carrier on his car roof for a 12-hour family trip is spreading again on the Internet and disturbs me the more I learn about it.

And I am betting the more it gets out, the more votes Romney loses — red, blue and purple.

When, in a campaign debate, Romney opposed allowing a non-documented worker who has lived here for 25 years to stay and earn his way to citizenship, he struck me as heartless.

But when I read the story recently in greater detail about what Romney did to his Irish Setter, Seamus, that struck me as more than heartless — it struck me as downright cruel.

As for riding down a road or freeway with a dog in back of the pickup, I wouldn’t have mentioned it if I hadn’t seen it.

Sorry I don’t click blind links. Not a sensible practice.

Please tell us what it says in your own words, if you would?

By Jeanne Moos New York (CNN) - Mitt Romney's dog Seamus may have passed away years ago, but his story keeps getting resurrected.

It's the "dog-on-car-roof" ruckus revisited, and it has Republicans barking at each other.

Like most dogs, Mitt Romney says his dog Seamus liked fresh air.

He's getting plenty of airtime now thanks to New Gingrich's anti-Romney ad dredging up the old dog-in-the-kennel-on-the-car-roof story.

"We had five kids inside the car. My guess is he liked it a lot better in the kennel than he would have liked it inside," said Romney.

There's even a web site "Seamus 2012" that pretends it's Seamus speaking from doggie heaven. The original story was written by Boston Globe reporters back in 2007.

Writer Neil Swidey confirmed details of the story with Romney family members.

Way back in 1983 the Romneys piled into their station wagon for a 12 hour trip to Canada with the dog in his kennel on the roof.

Keep in mind, Romney had built a special windshield for the kennel, so when he put Seamus the dog up there on the roof, he was protected from the wind.

At some point, one of Romney's sons yelled to his dad that a brown liquid was dripping down the back window.

"To me, Mitt Romney treated his dog like a mattress or Christmas tree," said Swidey.

There were comments from Howard Stern, and a parody song on YouTube. There's even a re-imagined Hitler parody using a scene from downfall.

Anti-Romney demonstrators have popped up with stuffed dogs on car roofs, but the writer of the original article thinks the most interesting angle has been missed.

:When the dog is in distress, Mitt Romney pulls off the side of the road, into gas station, borrows a hose, washes it down and then puts dog back up there," said Swidey.

As he wrote, "it was a tiny preview of a trait he would grow famous for in business: emotion-free crisis management. CNN

Putting one’s dog on top of the car, is just plain weird.

Yeah, that was pretty much my reaction.

Obviously he has the freedom to what he wants, given that it's his dog. Likewise, people have the freedom cross-dress too—but I'll still find it weird and disconcerting.

Liberals were running with the dog on the car meme long before Newt Gingrich raised it.

Trust me, they haven’t forgotten.

Liberals WANT Romney to be the nominee. They believe they can decimate him in the general election.

If he’s having problems with Gingrich, he’ll never stand a chance against the entire liberal media attack monolith.

He’s be creamed.

We need a real candidate.

Material for an ad: “Don’t let Romney treat you like his dog. Vote for me.” (LOL!)

Last year I was in Ohio when the thunder run people were headed to dc. A Harley passed me running about seventy, with a little dog in his carrier behind the rider, dog did not seem in distress. Was I wrong in not calling the cops.

IMO a typical Harley rider makes a pretty good windshield for a little dog.

Just saying.

Lol, those motorcycle dog carriers still seem quite a bit different to me than strapping one’s dog to the TOP OF A CAR ROOF. Not really a worthy comparison.

On those polls I wished they had “none of the above” you could click on. I bet that’d be a real eye-opener.

Those damn people with those dog sleds make the dogs get out front, things need to be redesigned so the dogs push. Much more human. LOL

If we are going to criticize Romney, let’s do it about something significant......to the dog incident I say “so what”. Riding 12 hours with 7 people in a car, some active children, with a large dog....now that may worthy of criticism, especially by Mom.

Next thing you know, someone here will be whining about horse trailers.

Would you call the cops if a car passed you on the right? Would you call the cops if someone passed you going past the limit? Would you call the cops if you saw a car with one headlight out? Would you call the cops if you saw anyone breaking some vehicle operating law?

Put Palin back on that list.

That would open eyes.

I’ll confess my gripe with Romney is that I believe Romney deliberately sabotaged the 2008 election simply to remove Palin as a future political obstacle.

Romney is therefore it seems, the REASON OBAMA IS PRESIDENT.

That is reprehensible. The fact the GOP establishment was it has appeared all along, 100% complicit, even more so.

Yep. I am not a MR supporter, in fact I’d vote “E” none of the above.

I think you're taking this story way more seriously than my posting intended it to be.

As I said, I do think it shows weird judgment on his part—especially if I didn't know anything about Romney yet. But obviously there are far more larger, more substantive reasons to dislike Romney aside from his treatment of animals.
