If you ever worry about the future of America, there is no need: it is in good hands. A high school student named Angela is proof of that. We think you'll agree she is nothing short of amazing. CBS News correspondent Steve Hartman met her on the road.
Born to Chinese immigrants, 17-year-old Angela Zhang of Cupertino, California is a typical American teenager. She's really into shoes and is just learning how to drive.
But there is one thing that separates her from every other student at Monta Vista High School, something she first shared with her chemistry teacher, Kavita Gupta.
It's a research paper Angela wrote in her spare time -- and it is advanced, to say the least. Gupta says all she knows is its recipe -- for curing cancer.
"Cure for cancer -- a high school student," said Gupta. "It's just so mind-boggling. I just cannot even begin to comprehend how she even thought about it or did this."
"I just thought, 'Why not?' 'What is there to lose?'" said Angela.
When she was a freshman, she started reading doctorate level papers on bio-engineering.
"At first it was a little bit overwhelming," said Angela, "but I found that it almost became like a puzzle, being able to decode something."
By sophomore year she'd talked her way into the lab at Stanford, and by junior year was doing her own research.

I know it’s cynical, but I expect 2 or 3 weeks we’ll rad she’s being sud by the AMA, facing charges by California by a whole slew of charges from Practicing Medicine without a License to Animal cruelty, and the IRS is auditing her and family.
I guess it’s a good thing she wasn’t aborted.
If you want more of an item, subsidize it. Our government has been doing that for 50 years.
They are, but she isn't.
Meanwhile, at the science fair:
You made a stupid lemon clock...I CURED CANCER!!!
It’ll take years to know if it works in humans — but in mice — the tumors almost completely disappeared.
Wonder how many people will suffer an agonizing death while we wait on the FDA to determine if this approach is “safe” to use on humans.
Wowser. Best of luck and much success in all your endeavors, Angela! God speed.
they will fight her because they make so much more when there isn’t a cure..........
The cancer treatment with micro particle that release cancer drug in cancer cell only is in current practice . Mr. Rudy Giuliani has been treated in that way for his prostate cancer at the beginning of his campaign for the US senator from NY(Hillary was his opponent).
The answers to the most difficult questions can be found in the most unlikely of places.
A great accomplishment for someone her age regardless. Her idea is similar to that developed by another audodidact, John Kanzius, who came up with the idea of delivering metallic nanoparticles rather than cancer drugs directly to tumor sites, and then using RF energy to destroy them without damaging nearby tissues. His method is now going into clinical testing:

Brilliant minds don’t need massive governmental programs, they just need the freedom to explore and create.
"I think it was more of a -- 'This is really cool, I want to see if it works' -- type thing," she said.
"And when you found out it did..." asked Hartman.
"That was pretty amazing."
It'll take years to know if it works in humans -- but in mice -- the tumors almost completely disappeared."
Well, that seals it. This cancer treatment will never see the light of day. Wouldn't want to endanger all those billions in cancer research grants, or inhibit the sickness industry in any way.
Priorities, you know...
I don’t know what the chemicals are, but I sure how the reaction doesn’t release any CO2 particles... California will immediately tag it with a per-molecule cap and trade carbon tax
“”The problem is all the powerful, vested interests who want to keep things just the way they are.””
Including finding a cure for cancer. Does anyone really believe this student found something that billions of dollars of research hasn’t found? It’s been found all right but will never reach the market.
Is this science fact? (I seriously don't know)
Are there "nanoparticles" that can differentiate between healthy cells and cancer cells and attach themselves?
The way I'm reading this...that science/capability exists and Angela's idea is the addition of the melt-able, medicated polymer to the existing, cancer-cell-attaching-nanoparticles.
If the cancer-cell-attaching-nanoparticles don't currently exist (or are not know to be possible) then isn't this just a "wouldn't it be cool if..." story?
I hope no one steals her work. She probably doesn’t even worry about that.
I believe that Pyramid Diagnostics labs was doing something similar back in the late 80s, early 90s, but were using radioactive isotopes, rather than anti-cancer meds.
The only reason I'm aware of this is that I helped install the network at one of their locations, I believe in TN, but it's been so long I really can't recall. It was weird hearing a gieger counter clicking all the time, and the lab employees REALLY freaked when I threw a printer test page in the trash. Turns out it was marked with the radioactive symbol, and the Dept of Energy seemed to frown on that sort of thing... Nothing was actually radioactive, it's just the paper was marked with the warning symbol.
Mark
how do the nanoparticles know which cells are cancerous to attach to?
