Gingrich Decries 'Backdoor Socialism'
Fox ^ | 1-12-12 | LYN

Posted on 01/12/2012 4:31:45 PM PST by VinL

Gingrich returned to the stump Thursday with a heavy dose of populism and defended himself against charges of being anti-capitalist and anti-free enterprise.

"I think when you have crony capitalism of politicians taking care of their friends, that's not free enterprise, that's just backdoor socialism in which the rich get all the money and the rest of us get left, get left with all the debt," Gingrich told an audience of senior citizens gathered at the state fair grounds for a convention.

Gingrich said he's been "amazed" by the intensity of critics who he said are attacking him for questioning the bailout of big banks. He suggested the bailouts were tied to corruption at the Federal Reserve and the Treasury.

"American people have a right to know what has been happening to their economy, and they have a right to know where all the money went, they deserve an audit on the Federal Reserve, and the Treasury, to find out where the money went, to find out who got the money and why they got the money," said Gingrich to wide applause.

But it's not Mr. Gingrich's questions about bank bailouts that are raising eyebrows among prominent conservative voices, it's his questions about Mitt Romney's record at Bain Capital. And while Gingrich would later tell reporters he was referring specifically to the bailouts of AIG and Goldman Sachs when he criticized "back door socialism," the candidate made a point to tell seniors that it wasn't just financial institutions that need to be more transparent but also presidential candidates as well.

US taxpayers gave Newt $1.6 million, to act as “historian” consultant, to justify Fannie and liar loans, and he criticizes anybody else, grabbing money at the government feeding trough?

He’s merely one of them.

What kind of capitalism involves a failed GSE paying $1.6 million to hire a “historian.”

Respectfully, how does that in any way negate that the Republican Party,— stereotyped as the party of the rich— now are promoting a man who is worth a 1/4 billion dollars in the midst of a Depression. If there is a quintessential country club Establishment Republican- it’s Romney——
it’s either idiocy, audacity, or throwing the election-— maybe all.

He isn’t on an anti-Capitalism tear, he’s on a quest for the truth. If you don’t know or are unaware, I am opposed to crony capitalism (government+corporations) which I consider to be fascist.

Quote:

“[Romney]’s not being attacked for being a capitalist, but for being untruthful. Romney tried to pretend that his business experience was somewhat like his father’s (head of GM), but he was actually not in a productive industry but in a speculative area of the financial industry that profited off of dying companies or even off of killing other companies. This may have its purpose (within reason), but Romney has to be honest about it and defend it.”

“He’s especially got to explain that inconvenient part about the bailout (which is the same kind of crony capitalism that Obama’s crowd has engaged in).”

There was this incredible incredible interview with him live on Fox & Friends this a.m. The 3 were sitting on the couch and they started with their usual friendly first question, and then went for the jugular - and for at least 4 or 5 minutes, Newt just kept talking over them. I don’t mean a few words, I don’t mean a few sentences, I mean in 30-seconds bits at a time. He just kept talking – making his points – and they kept trying to interrupt him, he kept talking, they got silent for a few seconds, then one of them tried to interrupt him again and Newt just kept talking – like they weren’t even there! And while he was talking they kept glancing at each other – their body language spoke they were ready to leap off the couch – and Newt just kept talking and talking and talking. It was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. He was just a human bulldozer – and he WOULD NOT SHUT UP. No matter what they did. And on the following program someone said, whew I’ve never seen a filibuster like that before… Try to think of anybody, anybody in the republican party doing that… they might for 10 seconds, maybe one time, but over and over and over again… This is the fighter we need. This is the fighter who can save America.

Newt is actually offering a rational alternative to Ron Paul with this. It is times that we are living in that brings a groundswell of populism, because we truly are in this mess together and we truly need Newt’s brand of conservative reform to face off against Obama. This is the truly vital discussion. We know that the establishment Republicans, such as the ones left running the congress when Newt left in ‘99, together with an establishment president (W’s domestic policies) just ran us into the ground. All what was left was Pelosi, Reid and Obama to build the landfill on top! Some of the worst abuses of the public interest came to us in W’s last couple of years.

Sarah Palin was right that we should not simply disregard Ron Paul and his supporters. If anything we should embrace the sane aspects of his domestic policies and reclaim them for conservatism. The elitists will see us out all in the name of capitalism. It is times such as these that remind us that the constitution is for all of us, not just the establishment moderates and liberals.

Newtie took $$ essentially from the gov't. Selling influence much like Tom Daschle. Claiming otherwise is like being a battered wife.

It's really much worse than Romney.

He is exactly right. The Republican/Democrat establishment socialists are in bed with the corporate elite in this country and it's about d@mn time somebody said it!

It appears that even Newt is upset with the way he is on a bizarre, anti Capitalism tear. It just depends on what time of day you ask him.

*********

And Laz, where is your guy? Rick, says let’s not attack Romney. Where’s that going to get Santurom when he’s 15 points behind in the polls? Well, maybe the VP if he genuflects with obediently and with sincerity.

Newt is finished, done, over and so is Rick Perry. One by one, all the promising conservative candidates have shot themselves in the foot and have made themselves undesirable and unelectable. Romney is the last man standing. But he is just another RINO, a McCain Jr., and I doubt he is even willing to take on Obama or bring real change to Washington. Obama has screwed up so bad, this election was for GOP to lose, it offered best hope for conservative to take the WH. But so far, it has been so sad, I hope some miracle happens.

Newt's a good talker...but very strange at walking out the walk.

His climate change rhetoric from a year or so ago makes me shudder.

It does not negate it. Both Romney and Gingrich lost any chance at my support long ago. Yes, the Party is pushing Romney. But they have no track record for being interested in what is good for America in a fair piece. Then again, having all the Newt cult sound like Paulbots does not help their candidate either. If you have any reservations about Newt, you MUST be for Romney in their book.

Newt really needs to move on from this, especially given his dealings with Freddie Mac.

Exactly. I'm very Libertarian-minded, and this is why I'm with Newt on many issues. He's been giving well-thought out, philosophically-consistent, pragmatic solutions towards achieving limited government.
