NASHUA, N.H. (AP) Republican front-runner Mitt Romney stumbled down the homestretch of the New Hampshire primary on Monday, declaring, "I like being able to fire people who provide services to me" as his rivals intensified already fierce criticism.
"Gov. Romney enjoys firing people. I enjoy creating jobs," said former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, who has staked his candidacy on a strong showing in Tuesday's primary and has shown signs of gaining ground in recent polls.
Romney is the odds-on favorite in New Hampshire, and Huntsman as well as other Republicans who are contesting the state have generally been content to vie for second place in hopes of emerging as his main rival in the South Carolina primary on Jan. 21.

Psst. Romney is a snake oil salesman....and he’s a socialist liberal snake. Watch out!
Do I smell toast?
I agree totally with what he said as I read it in context but I also realize that it was a huge blunder for Romney. In this upside down, bassackwards remnant of what used to be the USA it only matters what someone can claim he said. I don’t support Romney and I won’t weep for him when he is pounded over the head with this as if he really meant that he derives pleasure from putting people out of a job.
You've no idea what my agenda is. But do interview for a management job and use the full quote there. We're waiting for the results.
You don't get it. The rats will be taking it out of context. All you will see in the fall if Mitt gets the nomination is, "I like being able to fire people."
If Romney is so in love with letting people pick and choose their insurance companies, then why did he invent the sort of government-controlled health care that makes that impossible? No, sorry, but using this stupid, inept, idiotic comment against Romney is perfectly apt because it demonstrates his own arrogance and lack of touch with reality. What Romney says bears absolutely no connection with what he does, and what he does is not conservative or republican, it’s mainline progressive liberalism.
WatchOutForZots
I realize now that Newt and Perry are crappy RINO Democrats. I wish I’d never invested any hope in them. Attacking from the left makes me realize how misled we’ve been this whole time.
Romney is right. Anybody should be able to fire their insurance company, or their bank whenever they want.
I’d rather vote for one of the Google boys despite their socialist leanings, because they’ve created thousands of jobs, while this clown, however you defend his statement above, has killed thousands of jobs, and that itself is not disputed! An entrepreneur creates jobs.
And the sky is blue! Who is threatening his right to do that?
Yup, don’t feel a bit sorry for him. Stupid to give such sound bites to LSM or other opponents. He started it, especially in Iowa.
Like he said, politics ain’t bean bag, and if you can’t stand the heat....
When I heard his comment it sounded like “I like to fire people!” He better watch what he says cause the Democrats will kill him with his own words! It also came right after I heard the Bain Capital hit piece. It just hit me wrong I guess and it sounded to me like he liked firing people! Which I’m sure he didn’t mean for it to sound that way!
They are opportunists who see an political opportunity to gain from this and they would do the same if they were POTUS, as would Romney. I never had any hopes in them and trust none of them.
RE :”Romney is right. Anybody should be able to fire their insurance company, or their bank whenever they want.”
While your principle above is correct, Romney making big money by being involved in layoffs while supporting TARP bailouts of investors who made bad (risky) investment decisions with taxpayer $$$ would be one hell-of-a-gift to Obama if he is nominated. It would be different if Romney opposed bailouts and stimulus when Bush was POTUS, but he was for them. Opportunists like him show themselves as obvious hypocrites who only believe in capitalism when it makes them $$$ and socialism when it makes them $$$.
Republicans supporting TARP were a big nail in the coffin of capitalism.
I’d enjoy firing Obama...Pelosi....Reid.....the possibilities for profound pleasure are almost endless.
Creative destruction didn't start with Mitt and Bain Capital, and a lot of companies have dead weight and can't compete, but Romney is a crappy politician with a tin ear in the Great Recession, plus he has no core beliefs to boot! I don't want Mitt to face Obama with his class warfare campaign in November.
I’d enjoy firing Obama...Pelosi....Reid.....the possibilities for profound pleasure are almost endless.
Perry and Huntsman piling on moves them down the ladder for me as well.
That being said, Romney has a habit of saying a little too much. If he stopped before “I like firing people”, his original point would have been made. Now he has to play defense because those four words won't be attached to anything else he said at the time.
Our potential Candidates reinforcing the lying tactics of the Democrats doesn't work for me. We have to attack Liberalism with the truth and we have to figure out a way to educate the Ignorant Populace that lives for the NYT Headline and the DNC Talking Point.
The “I like to fire people” gaff should be added to all the Bain attack ads. Have a bunch of people who lost there jobs because of Romney, then show Romney saying.. I love to fire people!
then run it about 10000000000 times in South Carolina.
I don’t care about the facts! I want Romney DESTROYED! and this is a great sound bite to help us achieve that!
Romney can go to H E double hockey sticks
You need to take your Romney loving butt to another site.
