I live in Norway and as most of you know the handgun laws here are insane but I discovered that .177 cal. pellet guns are exempt from the avalanche of paperwork and most other rules.
With the increasing criminality in Oslo I was thinking of getting one to at least act as a deterent or precieved equalization of the situation. It is better than having nothing.

Crossman model 1099. CO2 powered and 625 fps muzzle velocity. You can buy the basic model that uses the small co2 cylinder good for 25 or so shots or the better model that can use the large co2 cylinder good for many more shots. This is a good protection weapon since you can pepper someone with .177 pellets as fast as you can pull the trigger and 625 fps can kill a small varmit.
airguns for defense? You’d better hope you’re accurate enough to shoot a home invader clean through the eye, because a hit anywhere else would most likely just piss him off.

Better qualify that statement. Here in Massachusetts, you can't buy a gun with an "assault magazine," eg a weapon that hold more than 13 or 14 rounds (tubular mags exempt). You can't buy handguns unless you are 21+, there is a ten day waiting period (or is it thirty?) for buying a gun, and I would not be suprised if they report you if you buy certain guns in quick succession (but I'm just guessing on that one.)

How about a full-auto BB gun? Are they allowed?
If you had a full-auto BB gun for home defense I think that might work! No criminal could take being sprayed with a bunch of BBs.

Use the tail for a toothpick. I use a box of Possum Helper for a real treat. Possum a real tricky citter. Sometime, you go to shoot a possum and you flash a light up in a tree and you ask “Possum? Is that you?” And he answer “Nope. Just a owl”. They can even disgise...disgeyes....change they voice.
I agree with the others that an air rifle is not practical for self defense. There are a few very expensive pre charged pneumatics which are about as powerful as a .357 magnum but like I said, very expensive.
I too have an RWS (Dynamit Nobel) Diana model 48. It shoots a light weight but standard lead pellet around 1200 fps. Most of those which say 1200 fps are really around 900 fps which is still fairly powerful. Even the model 48 tho is not even up to a .22lr. It is also heavy and slow to reload and cock.
The problem with CO2 is that it is limited to power as the CO2 gas will never expand rapidly enough for real power.
The advantage to CO2 is that it can be used for rapid repeaters and even at their power level they just might hurt so much as to make an intruder leave.
So in essence, an air rifle is not a viable choice for self defense, but in a pinch I would use one.
Will he issue a strongly worded statement afterward?
BTW, depending on the laws where you live, it’s possible that an antique gun would be OK for self-defense and not require a great load of paperwork.
I visited Oslo 12 years ago and was struck by how well preserved and beautiful the center city was. Most American cities of that size have a lawless, bombed out urban core where the whites have simply left.
Nobody in those American cities gave much thought as to their personal safety either until the race riots of the 1960’s. Sad to see this happen to Oslo.
Seriously, .177 pistol won't kill a cat, what do you think it will do to a criminal?

I recall a thread a while back that referred to something that could be called a “tactical umbrella”—umbrellas specically made to act as self-defense weapons. They look and work like an ordinary umbrella but are made out of tough materials. Any place where the average man is often seen with an umbrella and they become invisible.
I noticed that PyramidAir sells a couple of rifles in .45 and .50 caliber with a muzzle velocity of about 700fps. What kind of damage could those do?
